How to get slaves to work?

I just bought a slave and was excited to have them work when I realized they did nothing but sit around. I don't know any way to get them to work and I think I'm either blind or they just would rather die like the salesman told me.

Press c to open the menu.
There you can select them and then order them to either mine a specific ore or if you bought an anvil for them from the tool shop to craft weapons for you. You can adjust at their anvil what they craft.
