FF is FF.
Metaphor is Persona.
DoraQue was promoted a lot.
I dislike how expensive Ys X is and for sure it hurt sales. Almost skipped it myself because of how expensive it is. I hope it didn't bomb, because I still want future Ys games to be made.
So every 60€ games in the market, big or small, should be compared to these 3 games published by studios with huge renown / better known / well established in the market ? LOL
Compare what is comparable before telling something bombed or whatever.
Price is not a point of comparison at all XD And biaised oriented player counts neither
Free critics for the sake of criticizing something.
the people that really wanted to play probably already did on one of those.

Might have pulled up a little now with PC sales, but still.
And even when you get into other niche games that are basically side projects, the Romancing SaGa 2 remake is a big, expansive RPG and it costs $10 less than Ys X, and has a much higher 24-hour peak player count right now.
I really like the Ys series- I've been playing it back when many entries were only accessible through fan translations- But a price point of $60 for this kind of small-studio project means you're really only grabbing the people who were already really into the Ys series, which is not a large pool of buyers.
But even more importantly, the gameplay just isn't up to par. The boat part is 'okayish', but again it's also extremely dated in terms of mechanics and just very shallow. It's a game all about sailing and exploring the seas, yet this part of it is just mediocre at best. Even the water still looks awful. They couldn't even bother to give proper fishing animation because the lure flies ahead at full speed when your character is pulling the rod backwards in prep to throw. That's just beyond lazy.
And the combat itself also just isn't up to par to be honest. It's unpolished, the few solo-combat parts show that the solo combat in this game is the worst in the entire franchise and the DUO combat seems to have an identity crisis because they couldn't figure out whether they wanted to re-use the old combat system or make a new combat system. And the result is a combat system that isn't as good as the previous ones while also kinda failing to provide a proper new system since it's just held back too much by trying to be too much like the old one. It's not that the combat's best, but it's definitely lacking in terms of Ys standards. It doesn't seem to be very well thought out, polished or balanced.
I think Ys has the potential to sell, but I feel like Falcom has pretty much given up on Ys since Trails turned out to be their golden goose once Cold Steel came around. It'd be nice if they turned this attitude around with Ys XI, but honestly... I don't see it happening.
It's a niche series, they got the sales they wanted, it's damn good, one of the best in the franchise, but it's never reaching FF, Atlus or much less DQ numbers
Fair enough, but it's also not even reaching SaGa numbers, and you can't tell me that brand is a mainstream blockbuster.
the game has been released over a year ago on ps4 ps5 it now has also come to gog steam epic and nintendoestore and there is another port on steam by the same name (from cle)
steamdb is pretty useless in this case
ys has been around for ages and it will stay
and btw
if you want to go by steamdb it did pretty well in relation to other falcom games

Ys 8—considered by many the best one: peak 591
Ys Felghana—considered by many the best one: peak 438
Ys 1/2—basically the sole reason we have Ys & Trails games on PC/in the west: peak 544
Ys Nordics: peak 1497
It's a VERY different story when you look at it in the correct context. Ys is in a perfectly fine position, and arguably better than it's ever been. NISA and Falcom have both repeatedly cited in the past few years in investor reports that back catalog sales of Ys & Trails games on PC are selling above expectation and lead to them having greater than expected income. This modern obsession with concurrent player count misses the point entirely.
