How to Work on an ESM once you Convert It?

Does anyone know? I cannot seem to save a change to an existing ESM into an ESP, then convert it back into the an ESM with the same name. It simply will not load and the game gets stuck loading data.

Keep a copy of the original ESP and modify that.

The .esp seems to only have a limit of 4096 references "small-master capable", if those 4096 references are used does it switch to like "mid-master capable" and update the allowance of references?
