Starfield: Creation Kit

Linux Crashing on save
Anyone else crashing when trying to save a esp on Arch Linux-Gnome 45. Everything else works it's just when I go to save file the creation kit crashes. I've tried add .esp and .tes to the ending but that doesn't work.

Same.

To compare systems, Mint 21.3 (ubuntu 22.04), kernel 6.5.0-41.
Just to get it running without crashing shortly after load I need to use a Proton 8 build, anything newer simple crashes after the panels all finish loading.

I thought it might be the actual file-write function, but no, I can export other things from CK. It appears to exclusively be the basic save function, without which we can't edit mods with it :(

Same here with CK 1.12.36.0. I'm running Pop-os 22.04 LTS with 6.9.3 kernel. I've tried various Proton builds and while Proton 8 seems to work the save-crash still occurs.

Can anyone find this file? hkCompatFormats.dll

I looked for that file too, couldn't find it anywhere. I searched the file online, hits came up for Sekiro, Elden Ring, Detroit Become Human - but searching a windows PC with those three installed the file didn't appear either.

I don't like unresolved errors, as a general rule :D, so the missing file annoys me whether or not it is responsible for the crash on save.

Guess it's just a waiting game now until it's fixed. If they are even supporting Linux or not might even have to try to run in Protontricks.

SF CK has a ProtonDB page, https://www.protondb.com/app/2722710
Same issues reported, but maybe worth keeping an eye on.

The CK doesn't have an Issues entry on the Proton github, wondering if I should start one.

Hey, I just made a post on Proton’s GitHub page about this! I noticed no one had done so yet so I decided to make one. :)

Here’s the link to the issue: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/7884

Thank you :)

I found the 'how to submit' instructions a week ago, then lost them and forgot to go back and look again.

Ah ok, What RAM size do you have atm? I have 14.5 free memory (Steam Deck) and sadly the system freezes when it hits the limit, I have apparently heard of people having 16GB and even 8GB and being able to load the Starfield.esm file

32GB. I'm desktop Linux, with Nvidia GPU + AMD CPU. I wonder if it's the Nvidia GPU that prevents me using Proton Experimental and forcing me to drop back to a v8 build, where the full AMD system of a Steam Deck lets you use the newer Proton.

The CK itself is a little flaky from time to time, but once I'm running a v8 Proton I can get in and do some work, try and save and it's all over.

Watching usage, when starfield.esm is loaded and I start navigating, loading a cell, mem usage for CK process jumps up to near 17GB. I assume if I pushed the application harder it would do more, but I'm a little limited until I work out what I'm doing with it.

Ah I see, with the Steam Deck’s memory it seems CK on it’s own with only DefaultWorld (or DEFAULT.esp loaded) I seem to get around 4-5GB in use, Steam itself around 1GB (CK needs Steam to be open) and the rest would be for Starfield.esm. Desktop Mode’s System Monitor shows 2.4 GB in use for me (that seems to be the typical amount in use) which take that from 14.5 GB only leaves around 12 GB for Starfield.esm which isn’t enough.

Sadly the RAM on the Steam Deck is soldered and can’t be easily removed so stuff like the 32GB RAM mod puts me out of reach of it.

Before I forget, how much memory does CK take up for you with only Default.esp loaded in? As in you haven’t loaded Starfield.esm or any other plugins yet?

It seems to settle at about 4.7GB used

Ah ok, from my memory usage, it seems to be around 3.1 GB with no cells, 4GB with the wilderness cell open, and before my system freezes it seems to be around 11.6GB, so around 8.5 GB was loaded from Starfield.esm. Not sure if there’s anything else that can be done, all the other files depend on Starfield.esm, unless an esm file was made that doesn’t depend on it and doesn’t take up so much memory.

How would you even make anything on the steam deck? I would think that would be very difficult... didn't even know it could do that.

BTW the CK goes into unresponsive window when loading the Starfield.esm but if you wait it will eventually load all the way.

Using GE proton 9-9 doesn't crash at all until save.

Ah ok, how much memory do you have and how much does Creation Kit take up, both with nothing loaded and with Starfield.esm loaded?

I’ve used both blender and Godot on the Steam Deck and both work pretty well! Blender even has it’s own controller layouts from the community on Steam Deck too :)
