Free Aim Projectiles Complaint
On a mouse pad, it is somewhat easy to right click instead of left click. This led to the (admittedly somewhat comical) situation where I was out of combat and moving around and accidentally ended up shooting at the tile in front of me, which ended up going to a fire pot 3 tiles ahead of me, which ended up blowing up and killing me. I have also run into similar situations where I fired accidentally in the middle of combat, usually leading to me taking damage I wouldn't have otherwise.

Would it be possible to add an option that makes it so that the free shooting option is bound to a specific key you need to hold in order to use it, similar to the Unsafe Action key?

I think this is pretty much exactly what I'll end up doing. The need to free shoot is pretty rare (invis and darkness was the reason it was even added). I think that simply tying it to the same [Z] (default) key and just making that a general 'free action' type key is what I'll end up going with.
