Hard to say what they will do with No Man's Sky. Such a game can't get endless support with only money from selling the game. At some point, sales figures collapse.

But it's hard to say whether LNF will have anything to do with it. They have been developing it for 5 years without seeing any lack of support at NMS.

Personally I'd love to see a new IP from them. As much as NMS has now been redeemed and is an amazing game, they should be given a chance to experiment with new things; new settings, new worlds, new mechanics, new narrative, new stories.

Having said that, I doubt they'd end support for NMS.

We know there will be updates in 2024 and it looks like 2024 will be a big year for NMS. Hello Games LLC corporate earning in 2022 was 40 mill euros, most of that would be from NMS. Also the new game appears to be running a improved NMS engine. Based on those facts I think we can count on updates for at least the next two years.

Given that LNF and NMS use the same game engine we could see some cross pollination which could leed to many years of of updates for NMS. Or (ironically) if LNF is really good it could lead to a mass migration of players that would cause NMS to fade away. LNF will either save NMS or kill it.

A good last point. @Lindy Bomber

No.

They said the people are still working on NMS and NMS still makes tons of money. They said NMS will still get updates all the time.

In fact, Sean said that if you think NMS had lots of updates last year wait until "this year."

LNF sounds like a different game from NMS, so I don't see them competing. LNF will be competing with sandbox RPG fantasy games.

ANYONE NOTICE IN THE CINEMATIC TRAILER THAT THERE IS A CRASHED SPACE ANOMALY IN THE BACK ROUND

There is a round structure with what look like a large hole in it. But it is not the space anomaly, the surface texture looks like stone

to be fair they probably could sell future updates as expansions now, but guess they wanted to give back to the community after all that happend.

I guess one reason why they don't sell addons for NMS is the problem with the game itself. Not everyone would by every addon so the game must handle that and that would not work well on a game like NMS and would also limit the possibilities of such addons.

They could hide certain things behind a DCL paywall, like derilic freighters, interceptors, and Autophage. But they don't need to, the game has sold over 10 million copies and has generated total earning of over 140 million euros. Consider they have had on average 10 people working on this at any given time that is freaking amazing.

Considering that most everything shown in Light no Fires trailer is just a part of no man's sky, I'm guessing they'll work on the games concurrently. The dragon is just a space ship. The animals are just reskins (all the animals in NMS are just randomized textures from a set)
The water is the same, Coop and building seem the same (Just different assets and textures)
Light no Fires was probably pretty easy to get up and running just using the NMS engine.

Partially true.

The terrain generation in LNF is vastly more complex and realistic. Water surface effects are better and there are actual flowing rivers. Textures on everything are greatly improved. Either they have made major improvements to the engine or NMS is being held back by legacy hardware (probably both).

I think it's clear that one reason NMS has and will continue to receive such heavy constant support even years after release is because LNF is built on the same engine and tech. So a lot of the work on NMS adds to LNF and vice versa.

Very smart for such a small studio.
