Here in the USA, the Musou series was relatively popular during the time of the PS2, especially The Three Kingdoms games. Their popularity decreased as more big budget and online multiplayer games became the preference and standard on consoles for a lot of players. It also didn't help that around that same time, sentiment towards Japanese games took on a sort of contemptuous attitude.
Many people that enjoyed the Musou games in their youth now own and play on PCs, with the market having grown considerably as well. So, I can seem some sense in KT's decision.
