ture type fonts (ttf) also work.
If the creator of the font added licensing restrictions on the font, you are out of luck.
You could either buy a non restricted ttf version from the creator or create your own fonts.
you could also go the substance designer .sbsar route for creating the fonts for substance painter.
do i need to buy designer if i only have the perpetual painter one?
i found a font that is not restricted but its only showing in english so im not sure how to switch it to Japanese characters when the preview shows ♥♥♥
Maybe there are prior versions out there which you could use?
As a test, I tried out the Noto Sans Japanese ttf font from google and it showed the following symbols correctly.これはテストです
