I don't know of a way to play Dungeon Lords Steam Edition with the old 'No Mana, spells have independent charges, except that rune magic uses combinations of stones and the stones have charges, oh and nether magic uses combinations of ingredients that don't recharge' system.

If you really want the old spell system, then you could resort to buying an earlier version of the game on Amazon or somewhere. But be prepared for compatibility issues, possibly manually patching from 1.0 to a later version, and more crashes or game breaking bugs than the Steam version. I don't know which version changed the spell system, so if you buy the MMXII version I'm not sure which spell system you'll be getting.

Your best bet would be to buy the collector's edition, which is version 1.5C, MMXII still has the reworked system. Keep in mind you cannot manually patch to 1.5C if you buy the non-collector's edition. The collector's edition should install and run just fine on Windows 10, I just finished playing through it a couple days ago. the resolution will be in 4:3 by default and can't go higher than 1600x1200, but there is a way to force it to 1920x1080 with a hex editor, the camera gets a little funky sometimes from doing this but it is very serviceable.
I know the magic system was one of the best things different I like about this game. If it stays the way it is now It's no different then any other magic system.
