Some tips for new players
Things I've picked up playing through this game;

A brief intro to the class system; you get two base classes (adept, mage, fighter, rogue), two tier-two classes, and 1 tier-3 class. You start the game with one class, and must join a guild (and complete a quest) to recieve a second class. There are two "free" guilds; the eastern guild, and the sisterhood (requires female character). Those guilds offer additional "options" for 2nd and 3rd tier classes.

http://www.gamebanshee.com/dungeonlords/ has excellent information on classes, skills, walkthrough, etc. Note that at this time of writing, the stylesheets are broken on a bunch of the content, but it's still there; you just have to scroll down a way to get to it.

1. I.... strongly recommend starting as a rogue. I've played through the first portion of the game (through completing the events in Arindale and returning to Fargrove) twice now; once without, and once with. When playing as a rogue, I had equipment almost as good as I acquired over the entire first game before I left fargrove, and by the time I returned to fargrove, I was doing roughly 3x the damage per attack as the prior playthrough. The difference was opening all the chests. Bash is unreliable, and the equipment from chests is far far better than the drops from enemies.

2. Weapons (and armor) loose durability as they're used. Keep a couple sets of weapons on hand, and when heading into a dungeon, don't use your best weapons until you find the "boss" fights, to preserve durability. Invest some in the repair skill, but use repair kits judiciously. You can buy some extra repair kits from vendors, but they are not unlimited. Also note that ranged weapons (thrown and bow) do not degrade, so using ranged weapons at times is a good idea. And some enemies are just far easier to kill with ranged weapons.

3. Once you get to Arindale, you will not be able to return to Fargrove until you've completed a number of quests and dungeons. Plan for thils.

4. The "moonstone" item required to activate the moongates can be acquired on an island in the big northern lake. It's the big island, and it has only one spot you can get "in" to it's interior, so you'll likely have to swim around the island to find that entry point. You can go get this once you've gotten to Arindale.

5. Loot every chest. The trap disarm skill goes up with use. If you run into a lock that's just too hard, even with lockpicks, throw a point or two at inspect/disarm until you're able to manage it. If you open every chest you find, you won't get too far behind on the skills.

Fighter and Adept make for decent class combo's with Rogue. If you want to go adept, I strongly recommend making a female character so you can pick the "Valkyrie" tier-2 class. Anything based on fighter and valkyrie are the only classes which unlock the abilty to equip any armor better than leather. Adept->Valkyrie is nice because you get crystal (divine) magic, rune magic, and the ability to use pretty much any weapon in the game. Fighter combinations get all of that except for the crystal magic.

Anyone got more?

Quick save and load often just in case you pick up items that you cannot discard and is not mandatory to progress through the game.

I still like putting some points on bash. It makes opening chests a lot faster.

Another good thing about starting as a rogue 1st class is that it is relatively hard to take rogue if you plan on having it as your 2nd base class. You have to go to a much further part of the map with MUCH harder monsters on the way that you would have to have experience to cheese the monsters. Rogue as 2nd class you need to go to Skuldoon and if I recall you have to do a quest in Fargrove for the guild of mysteries that is also MUCH harder than visiting the witch (mage), Arindale (fighter), or light candle on tower (adept).

One thing you miss with rogue/fighter as base classes I think is magical weaponry so you can't get the ice effect or other magical weaponry effects though you can still equip and use the weapons.

You can still get Valkyrie as a tier 2 and get Magical Weaponry, provided you are female. Valkyrie is so good, I generally always go female just to take it.

One small thing I dislike about picking fighter 2nd, is that the Fighter charge ability only does damage if you picked Fighter as your starting class.

I often just sequence break and hop a mountain to Skuldoon after the starting city when I want to pick rogue as my 2nd class.

Also don't expect a lively multiplayer. Sadly. Never got the chance with the original jewel case version I got at a Wal-mart as a kid.

what, did steam stop allowing random mob encounters on top of the mountains? that low of a level with no perry, dexterity, or agility you die plain and simple the mobs 1 shot me lower than 8th level. but i have the collectors edition not the steam version. i also have the difficulty cranked usually so i level faster so i'm usually fighting from point a to point b like the mobs live in my back pocket.
