Old CD not working :/

Hey, I have recently found this game as an old CD in my house. The problem is, I can't seem to get it to work. It's trying to check if my graphic card is compatible and it won't stop (tried it on a virtual windows XP too). The CD key itself works fine with the CD. But I found that the game is on steam too, and I tried putting in the CD key. However, it's not valid (probably because it's an old release). Is there any way I could possibly get it on steam since i basically own the game already? I can provide photos if necessary.

Well... I tried it and it seemed to work. But after it started up and I tried doing something it just freezes.

Just because you own the physical copy doesn't mean you are rightful to owning it on steam. That's not how things work.
HOWEVER, what you're most likely looking for is the patches necessary for the game to run in modern video cards. I'd guess you don't own the gold edition otherwise you'd mention it so give a look in here[www.thegameengine.org] should describe well enough to likely solve your problem. If you have some doubt read the comments in there as they might answer a doubt you might have.
