Act of War: Direct Action

Widescreen
Hi, all. I've found this while searching the web.
http://www.moddb.com/games/act-of-war-direct-action/downloads/act-of-war-resolution-patch-steam-version
It's a modified executable, which obviously allows non 4:3/5:4 resolutions. Here's my question for you- If I'd use this exe would I risk being banned from steam?

1. No, this game does not use VAC and I don't think there is any problem at all.
2. If it would use VAC, a VAC ban would not allow you to play on VAC secured servers, others and single player would still be ok
3. I am more afraid of the file itself: how can we know it is clean? Trojan etc...?

From what little research I've done I believe that one of the developers of this game said that the game does indeed detect widescreen resolutions, but locks them out and even posted a solution which was seemengly used in this exe. I've also seen another mod based on this one which does the same thing for patched retail versions. But you'll never know 100% if it's legit or not unlit you try it I guess...

I am the author of said executable. I cannot give you more than my word that it does not do anything else. You can actually verify my claim by using a disassembler and check that I did not modify anything else. My description on ModDB is quite outspoken on what is changed, so a simple binary-comparison with your favorite hex-editor should do the trick.

I figured there wouldn't be anything wrong with it. But since you replied I'd like you to claryfy some things for me. I understand that the cutscenes, cinematics, menus and hud will be stretched to fill the screen, but during gameplay all objects (units and so on) will have the right proportins- just the wisible area will be wider?

The patch does not change anything about the way things are rendered, the standard engine mechanisms are used (I am merely unlocking more resolutions); so changing from, say, 1024x1280 to 1680x1050 should not be much different from changing from 1024x1280 to 1920x1080. If the game handles the transition in the first case properly, it will do so in the second case as well.

Thanks for for the explanation:)

I had to play each lost hope the game ever again. It was always the same, it may not work on a 64 bit system.
That said, Atari (publisher) and Eugen Systems (developer) again and again.

The happier I am now that it finally works again without problems and in a suitable resolution. What would be the developer and publisher without the energetic and imaginative community.

The two mods will certainly ensure that the game is played more often again.

It is and will be on of my most favourited games ever

It seems like the Steam version has been patched. I will look into updating the patch if necessary.

Edit: I have updated the file on ModDB. It still needs to be approved, so check back in a few hours.

Edit 2: Link.

Please make a backup before replacing the original executable with the patched one. Please also ensure that you downloaded the correct version from this site. If you downloaded the file before yesterday, you most likely have an outdated version of the executable. I unfortunately do not have the time to debug crashes (especially since it works fine for me and remote debugging is a time-consuming process) and cannot give you further assistance.
