Refrigerated Items On Shelves?
My OCD is killing me with this one! Why is the Milk, Juice, Butter, etc only allowed on open air shelves and not in the refrigerator units?

The butter could be disputable. I have always seen milk and juices in shelves (until opened) or if the juice is freshly squeezed with low expiration date.

Butter and Mozzarella should be in fridge, juice and milk not

Cheese products and butter I've always seen in a fridge no matter where I shop. Now at home that's another matter because someone I do know does leave a stick of butter on the counter to be room temp.

Juice I don't see in fridges, just on the shelf. Milk on the other hand, everywhere I go, they are always in the fridge. Never on the shelf itself. The only milk products I see on the shelf are condensed or powdered milk.

Parmigiano is not in fridge no no no ! never

That sounds so weird - milk on the shelves? We have juice in the cold as well as most of it is supposed to be fresh and thus would spoil if kept in room temp for too long.

Butter too, unless you're using it for baking or such, you take it out to room temp a few hours prior so it's soft once you need it. Mozzarella is also stored in the fridge, as it spoils easy. Parmigiano is debatable - I guess you can store it at room temp unopened, as it's usually packed up tightly, but our stores keep it in the cold as well, but I'm not too sure about that?

I have seen parmesan cheese on the shelf, and I have seen it in the fridge too. Where I work, it's on the shelf. Where I normally shop, also on the shelf. However, another place I frequently shop at, actually has some in the fridge. So depends on the store in that context.

I'd have to look at the bottle in the fridge, but I'm pretty sure it says to refrigerate when opened. Otherwise, if it's still sealed, being at room temp probably won't harm it.

I would say juice depends on the type Apple juice and Cranberry juice I always see on shelves. Orange juice I always see in fridge.
On the Milk bases: There is a specific way of processing it which allows it to be shelf-stable for ~6 months. However, once opened, it's refrigerated and best-used within a week. It's also roughly 4x the price. So, if it were to be changed, it's more so a "Dairy Products 2" item instead of a "Dairy Product 1" item.

Cheeses are a bit different, though. Hard Cheeses, such as Gouda and Cheddar, are able to be stored unopened at room temperature for several months. Soft cheeses, like Cream Cheese or Cottage Cheese, should be thrown out after 2 hours unrefrigerated. Aged cheese is typically fine to store at room temperature. And of course, processing the cheese by slicing or grating will increase the risk of foodborne illnesses.

Standard juice, unopened, Can be stored at room temp easily.

Butter is..... weird. Due to different practices around the word and different brand's standards, butter can last anywhere between 2 days and a month unrefrigerated. But, only if it's in an airtight container without moisture. So, best Refrigerate that butter.

fun fact: Steam apparently does not register "Foodborne" and "Unrefrigerated" as words.

Typical case of american discovering there's a world outside the US.
Wait till you see eggs sold at room temperature.

You do realize how condescending that tone is? It's basically borderline insulting. I'm well aware of differing standards across the world when it comes to food-related products. I can only speak of what I've seen here in the states, but that certainly doesn't mean it's the same everywhere.

Unsure what you mean by that. I live in Europe and certainly where I live, we keep milk, cheeses etc in the cold. Eggs are sold at room temp, yes, some still keep them in the cold at home, probably to reduce any risk of premature spoiling / for the eggs to last longer.

These things are highly dependent where you're from, and same rules don't even apply within the same continent.

That's actually interesting. The juices I drink have to be kept in the fridge or they will spoil - within a day or two or three, unsure, it's been a while since I accidentally forgot an unopened juice carton on the tabletop. But it definitely turns nasty quite easy.

It's interesting though, I had not thought that there'd be this many differing thoughts and experiences regarding preservation of simple foods like.. milk. Or cheese. Or even butter. That's kinda wild to me haha.

Yeah, for most juices, like apple juice, cranberry juice, grape juice and the like, I always see them on the shelf and just put them in the fridge at home. Orange juice on the other hand, yeah I only ever see those in the fridge at the stores. Eggs also I've only ever seen in the fridge too, not seen them sold on the shelf.
