Sorry to hear that you are having this problem and thank you for sending your system information over. It seems that your graphics card drivers are not up to date, so let's start by sorting that out and retest the game. To update them:
- Go to the official NVidia download centre here[www.nvidia.com]
- Using the dropdown menus, fill in your graphics card information and press "Search"
- In the new page, click on Download and then Download again
- Right-click over the file and select Run as administrator
- If you are prompted by Windows User Account Control, click on Yes. The installer will prompt you for an extraction path. Most users should be fine with the default path.
- Once the driver install has completed, the extracted files will automatically be removed from your PC. Choose OK.
- You will next be prompted to accept the NVIDIA software license agreement. Read the contents and then if you agree, click "AGREE AND CONTINUE" to proceed.
- Next, choose Custom (Advanced). Then click NEXT.
- Select Perform clean install and then click on NEXT.
- Once the installation has finished, reboot your PC one more time to complete the installation.

I found a solution that works for me:
1. Go to the executable 'w2.exe' in the installation directory steamapps/common/WormsWorldParty
2. Open the Properties
3. Go to the compatibility tab
4. Select 'Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution' and apply
5. Start the game by opening the executable.
6. If you now open the options menu it should not be black and you can change the resolution
7. After closing the game I deselected the 'Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution' option in properties.
That fixed it for me.
Enjoy!
This is what my screen looks like when I go into Options after starting normally:

This is what it looks like after using Billy Beach's suggestion of force starting it in 640x480 and then upping the resolution to 1920x1080
https://i.imgur.com/9lBnl4V.png
I've left both sides of the screen there on purpose. The left hand side is my secondary monitor that is 1920x1080. My primary monitor, and the one I would be playing WWP on, is 1920x1200.
As you can see in the first SS the right-hand screen has been afflicted with some weird resolution - looks remarkably like the old 4x3.
On the second SS there's actually two mouse pointers - one on each screen. The native Windows pointer on the left-hand screen and the WWP pointer on the game screen.
And, after all that, the reason why I went there (to turn the sound down) wasn't even an option.
Sorry to hear that this is happening - would it be possible to see your system information so that we can try to help? To do this:
- Hold down the Windows Key and press R, the Run dialogue should appear > Type dxdiag in the available text field > Click OK
- Click Save All Information > Save the file DxDiag.txt to your Desktop so it is easy to find
- Open the .txt file, copy all the contents > Paste all the contents to a free text hosting service such as http://justpaste.it, http://textuploader.com or http://freetexthost.com
- Copy the link to your post

Thanks for that - unfortunately the file requires access - can you make it open so that we can review it?

Thanks for sharing those.
Can you all please change your resolution in your graphics settings (if possible) to 1920x1080?
You may need to contact the manufacturer of your graphics on how to do this.
Or through your windows display option by typing resolution into your windows search bar and then changing the display to 1920x1080.
Then test the game.

Team17 Support.
To get rid of the white boxes you have to disable "Fullscreen Optimization" via right-click / Options / Compatibility for w2.exe.
To make the Options Screen visible edit the games resolution via registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Team17DigitalLTD\WormsWorldParty\Options to something like DisplayXSize=1920 and DisplayYSize=1080.
Is this problem really 5 years old?
Team17, when do you fix it?
