I've loved Worms from the first game and that goes back all the way into my early childhood, so Team17 will always have a part of my past that was awesome, met some of my now best friends through Worms, believe it or not. It's a shame that you can't be a part of the future as well. I would have loved to see it what you had in store, needless to say, this is not it.
And I wouldn't be embarassed to continue telling your friends about Worms (although how they could of gone through their lives never knowing what Worms is, baffles me)
Just not this Worms game in particular :P
Well, it looks to me that Team17 might be having trouble keeping up with the bills. Unless they can do something to fix this mess, three things might happen (off the top of my head).
1: They either get bought out and the IP is taken over, or buried.
2: The community moves on to an open source project. (This might happen if 1 occurs, though W:A will have an obstinate fanbase that will stay for a while before dwindling away)
3: This is less likely but someone else makes their own professional-grade take on the cartoony artillery game genre and it becomes a hit that takes over where Worms retired.
I think they know they are in trouble. They have only made Worms games for the most part. From what I have observed most of their other projects haven't really taken off. It just feels to me like they are running out of steam as it were.
New Worms games are the problem. They make a new Worms, but it always seems to be lacking in features. Each new game feels more and more stripped down. Granted, there are neat little trinkets and features but that doesn't really fill the gaps. A lot of their newer games suffer from lack of support and usually have quite a few major bugs. They release maybe a patch or two, then they start cranking out some dlc, but rather than support it and nurture it they move on to the next iteration which is also has the same problems and they repeat the cycle.
Worms Armageddon is what it is because of the Community and a couple of dedicated maintainers who at first worked without pay to keep W:A going. I wish WWP had that kind of treatment. Most Worms games usually only get one patch or service pack and then they are left there.
Team17 is like Bethesda Softworks and to an extent, Creative Assembly. Just not nearly as successful. But then again, neither Bethesda or Creative Assembly have ever had to face a competent competitor before. Otherwise they wouldn't be doing all that hot either.
Worms has the problem of having a legacy game in their series be the most feature filled and supported even when new Worms games released. This has created a stubborn fanbase that will probably "crash this series with no survivors" eventually (all future Worms games are usually judged by this one title's standards). On top of that there are 2 or 3 somewhat competent alternatives.
One of them is open source. We know what that one is. Not entirely terrible, bad art direction, lacking in overall charm and refinement, but still competent enough to compete. It still has a small but stable community. And it is free.
Finally, when Team 17 actually tries something new it doesn't take off. Worms 3D for instance. I liked that game (I have Worms Ultimate Mayhem). To others, it wasn't a "Worms" game.
Maybe Team17 should just create one central Worms game, and use that to build off of. Instead of charging $14 dollars for another small stripped down Worms game, charge that amount for feature rich expansions to this central title (modules, if you will). Bug fixes should remain free, but perhaps add in improved editors, utilities, weapons, and goodies to these premium modules.
After all, there is no free lunch.
all the best to you guys
thanks gentlemen have a good day :)
Thanks for the thread. OP - I totally understand the passion but please hold back the swears in case there's kids around.
We've been reading your feedback over the weekend and we'll be making plans to address it over the coming days. As soon as those plans are in place I'll give you details :)
