The new damage system for the trucks is too new for anyone to give you an experienced answer, but assuming that it is the same today as it has been for the last few years, then there is a maximum number of drivers and none of these drivers can work for other companies, then they should be able to be employed from an employment agency.
Another option to an expensive restoration would be to buy either a new or used truck and sell or trade in the old model.
Trailers can earn more money on individual AI transport jobs, however the amount is very small and there are other issues with allowing AI drivers access to your trailers, they may not be able to find a return load as often leading to a loss of work and therefor a reduced amount of overall earnings and profit. Many players find that it can make them also stop working.
Best set the trailers to private use for you unless you don't care about money or some driver not being as profitable.
Also, trailers profitability is a bit of a two-edged sword. At times a hired hand with a company owned trailer (i.e. a trailer you purchased) may actually increase revenue rather than getting a lower payout. However, there is the usual maintenance and such going on for trailers also. So it's not necessarily higher or lower per se compared to market trailers.
They do continue to perform minor maintenance on the truck.
I've never let a driver go, so I'm curious; do they retain all the stats they earned while driving for you when they go back to the employment pool?
