apart from that, what you could do (if you're tech savvy enough) is set up a virtual machine and try download through there. if crap goes haywire in there, it's a clear indication that the link or the site is compromised / infected / whatever'd. benefit of a virtual machine is that it's a contained environment, so anything happening in there will not impact your computer as such.
but like it said, tech savvy. it's a bit more involved than "just do this click that and voila".
