Barring a hardware upgrade (In the form of an entirely new PC preferably), you're simply going to have to lower your settings until the FPS drops halt. This isn't the same game it was when the 1000x family of gpus were the cat's pajamas. SCS has and continues to upgrade the game's visuals and physics.
At some point, it will be incumbent upon us, the ATS fanbase, to keep up with SCS as they continue to improve ATS' visuals. Considering that ATS can at least still function at a decent level with decade-old hardware, that's not an unfair proposition by any stretch of the imagination. It's not as if SCS is doing what Wildcard did with the Ark Survival series and (in practice) abandoned the original iteration of the game in favor of an "updated" version using the Unreal Engine 5 / 5.5, all while charging existing customers full price for the privilege of upgrading.
If you've previously used the TAA graphics mod, delete all files from it.
Make sure the game and Steam are not running in compatibility mode.
If running windows 7, use OpenGL mode as DX no longer works. Windows 7 is no longer supported by Steam or Microsoft, you need to upgrade to Win 10 or 11.
*Make sure your Windows swap file is set to 'system managed*IMPORTANT
Here is an article describing how to do it:
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/how-to-manage-virtual-memory-pagefile-windows-10,36929.html
However, instead of making a custom size you have to activate "System managed size". That is all you need to change. Confirm that change and restart your PC.
*Disable the NVIDIA overlay*
*Disable the Discord overlay*
*Disable the Steam overlay*
*Turn off or reduce the SSAO setting*
*Disabling FPS limit in game can remove stuttering.*
*Disabling HAGS (hardware acceleration) in windows can remove stutters*
*Setting owned trailers to private can remove stuttering due to a known bug*
Beware of mods, do not have mods running when setting up your PC for best GFX or performance.
Start a new, unmodded, vanilla profile with a name like "test profile" (you can have as many as you want without affecting your normal profile) and test the game.
Mods can severely impact frame rate and cause problems, you need to test them AFTER getting the GFX settings right.
Do not have any programs running in the background, especially Discord, browsers, Internet chat or messaging.
Reduce any scaling back to 100%
Don't overclock your GPU, even if it is factory overclocked.
You may need more than 20GB free on the system drive for swap files
If you are on NVIDIA and have previously used the Profile Inspector for better anti-aliasing, all SCS profiles MUST be restored to driver default, for game version 1.50.
If you use DSR, deactivate it.
Clean all system fans, make sure all grilles are free from dust and the cooling works properly for the system, the PSU, the GPU and CPU.
Always make sure your graphics drivers and Windows are both fully up to date.
Some anti-virus programs can cause a crash on start. You only need to use Windows Defender, that is the most reliable anti-virus and firewall program for Windows. Third-party paid for software is not needed.
