[Fixed] FPS capped at 60
Fixed!

Summary: FPS was capping at 60 despite settings for AMD graphics card and ATS configuration.

Solution: Turns out—in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition—I had previously set Radeon™ Chill to enabled with 60 FPS cap even though uninstalling and reinstalling it and the drivers didn't show a custom profile for ATS. Scanning games to add an ATS custom profile again allowed me to see this. Disabling this or setting the Peak FPS limit to 180 fixed this.

Original post below. Thanks!

Hi, everyone!

Returning to ATS after 6 months of downtime since my daughter's birth in July 2024, and I'm looking forward to adding more playtime atop the 146 hours I've accumulated so far for this great game!

I've been doing a lot of research here and elsewhere online to figure out how to remove the 60 FPS cap I'm noticing now for ATS. I'm finding mixed results as to whether it's possible or intended. I need your help, and you're my only hope.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT
Graphics Driver: AMD Software: Adrenaline Edition 24.12.1
RAM: 16 GB
OS: Windows 11
Primary Monitor: AOC CU34G2XP 34" 180 Hz Ultrawide
Gaming Chair: Walmart Flash Furniture High Back Designer White LeatherSoft Smooth Upholstered Executive Swivel Office Chair with Chrome Base and Arms

I've done the following:
- 3440x1440 Fullscreen
- 180Hz refresh reate
- V-sync off
- Limit frames to 180
- Graphics quality set to Low
- AMD FreeSync off/on with the monitor
- AMD FreeSync off/on with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
- Radeon™ Enhanced Sync disabled in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
- Removed the ATS profile on AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
- Yelled at my cat
- Confirmed System > Display > Advanced display to have 180 Hz refresh rate
- Toggle switches off/on in System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings
- Confirmed vsync, frame limit, and other settings in the config file
- Restarted after every change

In other games, I'm getting 144-180 FPS:
- Marvel Rivals
- Valheim
- Balatro
- Escape From Tarkov
- Cats Hidden in Georgia
- Lords of the Fallen
- X4: Foundations
- Assetto Corsa
- Endless Space 2
- Warhammer: Vermintide 2
- Tom Clancy's The Division 2

Since my rig is performant for other titles, I'm curious if there's something I'm doing or not doing specifically for ATS or that ATS is intended to be capped at 60 FPS despite having a setting for frame rate and frame limit. Does anyone know?

Thanks!
Ozasuke

Important Note: I don't have a problem playing games with FPS caps. By default, most fighting games have this (BlazBlue Centralfiction, Dragon Ball FighterZ, etc.) as well as games like Elden Ring or pretty much all of FromSoftware's games. However, if a game is going to show support for higher frame rates and/or frame limitations, then I want to explore and utilize it.

EDIT: I should also add that I get 180 FPS in the main menu (which looks so slick now) and even during loading into the garage. Upon entering the garage, FPS drops to 60, and driving remains at 60 FPS. FPS never drops below 60 nor above 60. Strange!

EDIT 2: Overview of what I've further tried:
- Turning it off and on again
- Uninstalling and reinstalling AMD Software and drivers
- Uninstalling and reinstalling ATS
- Verify integrity of files for ATS
- Disabled and enabled ATS mods
- Changed resolutions to 1920x1080 and 3440x1440
- Changed refresh rate for each resolution from 60, 144, and 180 Hz
- Enabled and disabled vsync
- Apologized to my cat and gave him treats
- Double-check that the monitor is still operating at 180 Hz while ATS is running
- Double-check other games are still operating at or around 180 FPS
- Sold my Volvo and picked up a Peterbilt

EDIT 3: Some more configuration checks/changes to no effect
- uset r_mode_refresh "0" and "180"
- uset r_vsync "0"

EDIT 4: Solution found! With a much older AMD video card, I had set Radeon™ Chill to enabled with a peak FPS limit of 60. This apparently lives on the computer forever despite uninstalling and reinstalling AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.

The setting is in the options graphics settings, just move the slider to the right, But I can say already, if you are seeing 150-180 fps anywhere it's not capped at 60.

I think you should apologize to your cat .... Maybe that will fix it :steamhappy:
check your gpu driver profiles as you may have a profile set for this game that's using an fps limit. Sounds like you already set the in-game menu to 180 but now check the graphics driver settings for the game.

IMO opinion 60 fps is fine for this game. But always best to set fps limit in-game to 1/2 of whatever your monitor's refresh rate is set at.

I agree. Anything above 60 FPS you're not seeing any significant change. Heck, on my previous computer, I was lucky to get 30 FPS and thought that was okay, but 60 is better.

EDIT: Also not aware of a FPS cap on this game. I think the slider is defaulted to 60 FPS(?) but completely optional. The only two things that I know of that would cap it are the in game slider or your GPU control panel settings (either for this game or global).

Also, the cat didn't appreciate your misdirected anger and left something for you in your shoe.

misdirected anger?...not me.

Probably responding to me where I yelled at my cat (which didn't fix things but thought I'd give it a shot). :LIS_poker_face:

I'll triple-check the GPU profiles for ATS. I've deleted game-specific settings, and I've previously confirmed general settings doesn't have vsync or any other related settings enabled. There's gotta be something hidden in there, though!

It's reassuring that the game doesn't actually have a frame cap. As previously stated, I don't have a problem playing in 60 FPS. I just want to figure out why I can't have more. :D:

EDIT: Unfortunately, no progress. I'll keep poking around, but I'm getting stumped.

I quoted you to agree with you, not to reply to you. My comments were directed to the OP.
could be limited by a 60hz monitor/tv

OP already stated they have 180Hz monitor. ;)

Yeah that's okay, and I appreciate everyone's feedback here. I certainly don't mind the "is it plugged in?"-type questions like the suggestion of whether my monitor is limiting to 60 Hz. I'm confident that hardware is set up correctly as other games are putting out 144-180+ FPS so it must be something to do with either how AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and/or the configuration in ATS itself.

Overview of what I've further tried:
- Turning it off and on again
- Uninstalling and reinstalling AMD Software and drivers
- Uninstalling and reinstalling ATS
- Verify integrity of files for ATS
- Disabled and enabled ATS mods
- Changed resolutions to 1920x1080 and 3440x1440

I know that uninstalling anything on Steam still keeps configuration files and such. Reinstalling ATS confirms this as all settings I've had remained intact. I'll probably next try uninstalling ATS and then hunt down and kill all ATS files in Documents and SteamApps folders. Anyone have any other suggestions I should try?
Did you look in the .cfg file and see what the - uset r_mode_refresh - is set to. What ever is there is what the game starts at. The new .cfg I got when I deleted my old one was set at 300 fps. Absolutely don't know why or how but that is what it was.
Ozasuke Jan 26 @ 9:11pm
That's a good call! Unfortunately, to no avail. I renamed the config file to config_old and launched the game to create a new config file. I then used Notepad++ to use the Compare plugin to diff the files.

In my config_old: uset r_mode_refresh "180"
In the new config: uset r_mode_refresh "0"

With it set to "0", I was getting 300 FPS in the main menu and while loading the garage, but it still caps to 60 in the garage and while driving. I'm inclined to believe now that it must be AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. While I have no game-specific profiles and have also uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers and software, there must be something it's doing to ATS itself for some reason.

Note that both old and new config files have uset r_vsync "0".
Ozasuke Jan 26 @ 9:40pm
WOW! Okay, so I went back into AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition to figure out how it's being special with just ATS. As previously stated, I had no custom game settings (i.e. Gaming > Games page is blank) so I told it to scan my games to add them to the Games page. I then quickly found ATS, checked out the Graphics Options configured for the game, and lo:

Radeon™ Chill was enabled with Idle FPS set to 60 and Peak FPS set to 60.

THAT was the culprit! I disabled it, and my FPS jumped to my in-game FPS cap of 180. Problem solved!

Please note that it's been my assumption that—with zero game profile customizations—all games will inherit the Global Gaming Experience (i.e. global settings). This apparently wasn't the case for ATS, and now I'm checking each game to make sure there aren't any other surprises.

Thank you all for your help! I don't think I would have found this out for myself if you weren't able to help me determine that it wasn't an ATS config problem!
