Visit a workshop (in game) and check what engine you use.
There are Cummins, CAT and Detroit Diesel engines. (did I miss one?)
You will find sound mods in the Forum here:
https://forum.scssoft.com/viewforum.php?f=212
... or in the Steam-Workshop.
There are mods that replace the sound. Some might also add new engines with the modded sound. You can use the filter symbol in the Workshop to find out which is which.
Read the mod description.
If you don't like the vanilla sound, you can also play around with the different volume sliders for the truck. It can make a huge difference.
Set them all to 0, and slide them in one by one until it sounds good for you.
good info I appreciate you taking the time, thanks!
Engine volume is the truck default sound, but that roaring noise you get is "exhaust volume" - on trucks like the w900 its REALLY loud, so turning that down to 50% but leaving engine and turbo up makes alot of difference. Turbo volume on some trucks makes a really awful high pitched whistling noise however.
