As I said in your post in ETS2 forum - A wheel with 900 degrees steering - anything else is a bonus.
a real truck is the best

3 years ago I bought the G920 wheel and pedals but went with the TH8A shifter and am very happy with both. both still working good as new

so you can buy the shifter separate for the wheel and paddle. if so then that might help me out money wise i can get just the wheel and padle. now and the the shifter later

Best of the Best costs Thousands of Dollars, but is also nearly completely unnecessary, especially for ATS. I would recommend any wheel you get have 900° Steering and Force Feedback (Not just haptic vibration). However, as your son is 11, he may or may not care about higher level features like accurate steering, feedback, button count, pedal feel, etc. Do you know if he has any interest in driving Manual? If he would like to drive manual, with a clutch and all, you should get a wheel set that includes three pedals now, so the shifter upgrade is cheap. If he intends to play automatic only, then you can get a wheel with only two pedals, which are often cheaper.

so something like a Logitech G29 Driving Force Racing Wheel for PlayStation 4, 5, and PC. from gamestop.
and a American Truck Simulator Shifter & ATS Button Box for Logitech G29 & G290 from amzon would work..

Logitech G29/G920
Thrustmaster T150/T300
It's enough for best experience for ETS 2 / ATS

The Logitech G wheels, I have the G920, are a good, feature complete, starter wheel. If you can afford them though, the Thrustmaster wheels are a higher quality version of similar products. The accessories like ATS Eaton Fuller Shift Knobs, and standalone button boxes are nice to have, but are not necessary by any means. I have played this game a lot, and have still not bought either myself.

What kind of budget are you looking at here? If you were considering A Logitech G29, Custom Shifter, and Button Box, I would instead look at spending a similar amount of money on a Thrustmaster Wheel and Thurstmaster TH8A shifter without an ATS Splitter Knob.

I personally own a Logitech G27 with a racing stand. from my knowledge they aren't compatible with any consoles past the PS3 unless you have a converter. still works on PC so I was able to get it for a sweet deal. zero issues since I got it in 2020
