Are these games fun without a wheel?
Always wondered about whether you can enjoy these games without going all out sim and setting up a wheel, trackIR/VR, etc.

If you would like to "ENJOY" it, a wheel is a MUST. But there are people out there playing it with controllers. I personally see no point in playing a simulator without the propper gear/equipment.

entirely different concept with a wheel
I have played tousands of hours with keyboard, no problem for me.

no real fun without the steering wheel :-) and yes enjoyment can be move to another dimension by special settings.

Yes they are although I'd reccomend a xbox/ps4 controller at the minimum.

XBOX one controller does the job fine too, just adjust wheel settings for sensitivity and non-linearity (put roughly same level on both), you get used to it pretty fast
I place a thick stick cap (about 3/4" height) for much better accuracy
But as said, best accuracy driving with a wheel

I used a controller for ages, this simulator isn't that deep....you can get away with it easily.

Then I got a wheel as a present and it is still fun, different....but then it comes down the set up, with pedals and maybe a gear stick.

Whether the game wants you to use a wheel or not doesn't matter, a controller will do you. You drive in plenty of other games with a pad, this game lets you too. It's just slower than those games.

Using a controller is essential for Truckers MP-Promods. The multi-player is basically GTA5 'random race'-mode. Trying to enjoy that with an expensive wheel setup is just foolhardy.

A wheel is optional, I agree with the sentiments, but a real game-changer is head-tracking. If people are looking for an affordable alternative to Track-IR or Tobii, I'm always glad to direct business to the good people of 'Delan Headtracker/Clip' here:
https://delanengineering.com/
It's an awesome piece of kit that adds a new level to the experience and transforms the way that you drive in ATS or ETS2. Does exactly the same thing as Track IR with the exact same effectiveness for a fraction of the cost. Don't use the provided or suggested drivers though as setting that up is a frigging nightmare. Get the open-source 'Opentrack' driver instead and be up and running in mere minutes.

I honestly recommend Delan Clip. It's one piece of kit that'll pay for itself inside three days, pricewise. There's more expensive entertainment that lasts shorter, relatively spoken.

Thanks for the responses. Bit of a mix of opinions here so I might wait for the next time I spot a deep discount on the Euro version and try it with a controller.

Yes.

I will throw in a dissenting opinion. I hated using a 360 xbox controller and always play with a keyboard and mouse. The default settings for using a mouse are lousy though. Download the demo and find out for yourself.

Are you talking about the 'mouse-steer' mode? I never tried it as I have a wheel-setup but I've always wondered how well that would work.

Wow, didn't even realise there was a demo lol. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

I use a wheel/pedals with a keyboard/mouse and it works well. I reckon you could use a controller ok with this game but its not going to be quite as immersive as with wheel and pedals. I got a second hand Logitech GT wheel and it works really well but no obvious force feedback. But it works even better in Project Cars 2. PC2 is an amazing game with a wheel!
