California truck speed limits
Hello SCS, been watching Squirrel's ATS videos and noticed that your highway speed limits for trucks is wrong, per California DOT law, tractor trailers are allowed a maximum of 55 mph, even if cars has 65, 70 limit etc.

This is entire California.

Really i thought on 4-lanes they allowed the faster speeds. Seems like having a bunch of trucks moving 15 mph slower would tend to cause more accidents since you want all traffic moving at the same speed. Odd law.

There are signs that read "Trucks and Autos with Trailers 55 Maximum" on Cali freeways.

I know a couple of truckers and even some good companies that will never ever touch California because of their stupid laws, not only truck speed but there's other rules I'm not aware that are far worst than speed limits there.

It's 55 period in California, and I love it.
Plus the CHIPs totally rekt those truckers to LOVE IT.

Why? You may wonder?
Cause when I drive through all the other states all the truckers are asshats who drive like they're racing. Speed limit is 65? They're going 85... yea.. I love watching a truck just fly past me like I'm standing still.

Wow I've observed the opposite. Most truckers want low insurance rates so drive within the speed limit.

The 55 mile speed limit was first started when the oil shortages started , and for what ever reason, it hasnt changed.
As a former driver I can tell you all of cali has a max speed of 55 MPH for trucks and cars with trailers, you must be CARB compliant (no old trucks without expensive conversion) unless you are instate with an extrension which might have already ended. Many drivers will refuse cali for many reasons, I hated the rediculously unsafe 15-20 MPH difference, the damn near always open weight stations and constant inspections, the patheticly set up truck parking in rest areas which was very tight and was not sized for modern trucks, and in many areas of the state the extremely limited parking. CHP's sole exsistance is to trouble trucks as much as possible.

TheQuagmire, 85 really? most trucks are geared for and goverened by the company they run for between 60 and 70 MPH, a handful run less like prime at 58, some O/O run up to 70-75, personaIly I ran 65, decent economy and a safetly margin for when ignorant 4 wheelers who blame trucks for everything start playing games.

Knoxx, economy as well, in my best truck, a Pete 587, fully loaded 62 got me 7.5ish depending on terrain, bumping it up to 65 (truck was geared for 65) dropped it to 7.3, and 70 was 6.5 or less. With 500-600+ miles a day it adds up.

Tazburg, it continues for "safety" reasons, but creates a new danger, which the almighty rulers in cali are blind to, with cars travelling 10-20 MPH faster depending on the areas speed limit, or more if you include speeding. Doesn't sound like much but a car going under the DOT bar of a trailer is not a pretty sight.

I could remember 55 limits as child was joke the rule was most states like Arizona and New Mexico go 70mph the ticket nothing more than $10 or so and Montana at the time just $5.00 fuel wastage tax did not go your record.

California could easily drop 55 mph especially outside urban areas. Speed differences are big blind spot to speed limiter rules. Trucks sometimes need to move over at times and speed limiter may cause an accident rather than prevent.

Speed limiter rules are always political demension to it something some people too blind or ignorant to notice.

The idea is presumable fuel economy. At least for a normal sedan, 55mph or 90km/h is typically about the sweetspot for effeciecy (or at least it used to be. Advances in engine technology might have changed that in the last 20 years, wouldn't be surprised). I would counter that the number of cars that might get accidently caught behind a slow moving truck and subsequently floor it to pass them offset a lot of any fuel savings going on.

It's like people driving 90 on the highways where I live. Their heart is in the right place, I suppose, but we have some two lane highways where the only place you get a dedicated passing lane is up hill (to get around trucks), and the people accelerating up to 130 to get past them before the hill runs out are definately offsetting all the environment saving captain slow ass is accomplishing. That's ignoring the fact that angry people don't drive effeciently, and are prone to causing accidents.

I'm inclined to agree with South Park on this one, as told in the 'Smug' episode.

In this case, I don't mind if SCS get's the speed limit wrong at least long enough to add a couple more states in. I've had enough driving at unreasonably slow speeds in Europe. Once there is enough map that I can avoid Cali (just like real life truckers!) I wont care, but until then I want to drive highway speed dammit!

Interesting. In Appalachia the laws are in reverse. Due to the constant rolling hills, while not actually legal truckers are generally overlooked for breaking speed limits while going downhill, since they'll be forced by gravity to go far below the speed limit going back uphill.

There's a 55mph limit on all Californian motorways, even if the speed limit for cars is higher.
If they instute all the ridiculous trucking laws that actually exist in CA I shall avoid it like I avoid France in ETS2.

Although maybe it should be more realistic. :)

As long as the fines are small in the game, I think I will just keep the pedal down in Cali. Real life California is the one state I do not even wish to visit. They have so many absurd laws. I don't think I even own a single vehicle that would even pass emissions test down there. The bad part is they ruined thier state so bad now they are moving everywhere else and ruining all the other states.

Around here in ND during harvest season, the speed limits are rarely if ever enforced on farm trucks and semi's. It is not uncommon to see a truck loaded with grain going 75 in a 55 on the county roads and even upwards of 80 at times though they tend to keep it just under 80 on the interstate. Most cops just flash them to warn them to slow down. Rarely do you ever see one pulled over. Weather can turn so fast the cops know that farmers have a hard time as it is getting their crops to the elevators let alone trying to do it adhering to speed limits. Granted all the roads around here are straight for 80 miles and you can see 10 miles down the road....

I live in Minnesota seen it here too and flash speed sirens as warning rather than pull over trucks and cars. I visit California by car bit never want drive a semi there because of rules and regs.
