Can't get rid of retarder

In the good old days, we only had the Engine Brake. We used to be able to set the cruise control for instance at the top of a steep downgrade to let's say 45mph, then turn on the engine brake to keep it at 45mph. If we didn't use to Engine Brake, the truck would take off unless you tap the brake. Now, it's like there is a retarder, even though I chose a transmission with no R in the title, just a regular transmission. I even checked Options Gameplay to see if there is a retarder setting checked or unchecked. I don't want a retarder, I want to do it manually with the Jake Brake.

Am I missing something? I've not driven a real Semi Truck that has a retarder (Freightliner Cascadia 2018, and a Kenworth T680 2015), I had to do it all manually, which is actually kinda fun. I feel like I'm driving in Euro Truck, not ATS.

I have the same issue on some trucks. I found that even turning the automatic retarder off in the settings still resulted in trucks (either equipped or not) behaving like it was engaged to auto. What helped in my case was to assign a key for "automatic retarder on/ off" and "decrease" and do it that way. I think the setting in the options menu is bugged, or is overwritten by the truck settings.

I personally unassigned all the keys related to the retarder. I have no understanding of retarders and jake brakes.

If you are not shy of using mods, check out Loader Saints Eaton Fuller transmission mod. Loads of transmissions in there w/o retarders

Jake's = engine braking without using psi from brakes.

Retarder= slows the vehicle without Psi also, preventing it from gaining momentum when on Uneven surfaces or inclines.
