issues with joystick H-shifter

Hi all, I've been playing the game for ages with an old joystick I use as an H-shifter. I use an old program called Joy-2-H shifter that converts joystick 'zones' into keyboard buttons. It always worked fine before, but after the last update it doesn't work. I find I can only use it to select a gear once, then once back into neutral i can never get it to go back into that gear a second time. Has something changed with the control scheme that makes this kind of joystick setup not work anymore? Thanks for any help.

Playing around with it more, it seems like it suddenly needs 2 key presses to switch into gear. If i do this with the keyboard it seems to work, but the joystick only inputs 1 press which only works once. Maybe something changed about how the game goes back into N from keypresses..
