Allison 6 speed transmission
Recently unlocked the Allison 6 speed. Wondering if any semi gearheads could shed some light on why a 6 speed transimission would be a better option then the stock 10 speed or 13 and 18 speeds which are available in game before the Allison. It was always my impression that more gears would be better especially for heavy hauling. Trying to wrap my head around why the Allions is unlocked at a higher driver level. Thanks

I think the 6 speed transmission is waste of money except you have strong engine what can pull 20 tonns easy, the 18th the best for me because more gears and on hills you can go faster up and with a 6 speed transmission idk because the gears long and if your trailer heavy it can be a problem

*if you know what i mean*

No idea why they added the 6 speed retarder at such a high level. The Eaton Fuller 18 speed is better for both fuel economy and pulling up hills. You can keep the egine at a more optimal rpm more often with more gears.

I did never really understand why it's the last, and that usually means the best, to unlock and I still don't... 18 speed gearboxes are still the best...
It's not any better and it's not the better option. Go for 13 or 18 speed gearboxes for a good shifting performance.

In the real world, Allison 6 speed transmissions are rarely used for anything other than city driving. Especially with Eaton's Automated Manual transmissions, true automatics are not used for much more than box trucks.

Use the Eaton 18 speed.

In the real world, I used the Allison automatic and a 600 hp Caterpillar for a 10 axle heavy haul. I chose the automatic because 1). missing a gear on a hill with a heavy load might mean stopping on the hill. 2). the smooth, quick shifts keep momentum going, 3). the torque converter makes less number of gears work like the 18 speed I replaced. and finally, 4). newer drivers cant hurt a Allison. Period. They are bullet proof.

That said, I am trying to create a mod for a good Allison. working the bugs out.

I like that rl truckers play this game. Now if only we had some apocalypse survivors.

The 6 speed Allison is used in this type of thing, among others.

So that mean the Allison is better?

No it's not. At least not for most of the trucks
It's good for city driving (local (non class 8) trucking) or busses and vehicles like that
Otr you'll always see Eatons. Climbing a mountain pass with a 6 speed gearbox won't be fun...
You won't find them in "On Highway" trucks...

Apart from real world considerations, add-on gear shifters or shifters that come with most PC wheels have around 6-8 gears.

There is no difference between the Allison and any of the other transmissions besides the gear ratios and number of speeds. The game doesn't model *any* of the major things that actually differentiates the various real-world boxes beyond that... As for the reasoning behind this being considered the top trans, I can only assume SCS considered it a gameplay advantage over the other boxes due to the fewer speeds.

[edit] Sorry I should have been more specific, 'due to the fewer speeds' - I should have said 'due to the fewer speeds over *a single gear range*'

A real-world 18 speed box *also* only has 6 selector slots (generally)... what was your point?

A real world 18 speed transmission has switches in the gear shift knob to allow you to select your range. I can think of only one custom shifter for PC controllers that does that. All the rest don't have that switch. That's my point.
