The Hollywood sign can not be used in any commercial capacity without proper licensing.
They probably spending enough on getting the contracts for the trucks squared away....if they tried to get every landmark in US thats under restriction like this they would go bankrupt fast.

Bah it rocks.. it's just amazing :D I like that so much!

It's because they can't use the Hollywood sign for commercial use without getting licensing rights to it. They have enough to get licenses for without doing ti for a sign.

I'm bewildered why the people who own the rights to the Hollywood Sign would want to restrict licensing of it in movies, games, and other media. Wouldn't the extra publicity increase visitors? What am I missing?

To be quite honest, I'm amazed there's "rights" to own. That's like saying you own the "rights" to depicting the Golden Gate Bridge or Empire State Building.

Many US landmarks are indeed owned in this sense.

Which is really, really dumb.

If it is private property and the owners have invested in it, taken risks and paid everything off, of course they are within their rights to license out rights to it. It is THEIR sign. THAT's not dumb. What, you think they government should use eminent domain to take it from them?

I simply question the business model of the owners of the Hollywood sign, but by no means want to force a change. If I owned it, I would make it more accessible, charge an admission fee, and let movies and games use it for the free publicity.

Dont forget this is MUUUUURRRIIIICAAAA! It's the land of greedy capitalists! :P

Anyway, I prefer our beloved World of trucks name :) It fits perfectly on that mountain. I had lot of fun to drive around L.A just to visit the city. And I am a bit frustrated that many roads seem to lead to some nice place and we can't drive there lol. Dang... But this is beautiful. i prefer to have less highway to drive and be able to drive deeper into bigger cities. It's so much more fun. I really like the work on ATS they did so far and I'm really looking to get more. The only boring part of the game right now is the quite small size of the map. But well, if we give em a year to work on it, I know I'll be impressed by the work they'll deliver. I just can't wait! I'm not disapointed. I paid for many games on release, most of time it was a higher price... and I never been satistifed as much as I am with ATS right now. I drove for around 20h while some games like The Crew (that I paid full price), I played 3h and was bored. xD

ATS for the win folks! Long live World of trucks :)

It seems the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce owns the rights to the sign. They don't need to advertise as the sign is already so well known so they figure might as well make money on it. Found an article online about a college kid who made a film with a shot of the Hollywood sign in it which was legal as it was a non-commercial film but when they decide to show the film at a film festival he ran into legal problems.

Take the building? No.

But buildings and other landmarks shouldn't be something you can own the rights of visual representation to. You're depicting the area accurately, and you should never have to pay for that.
what if they would change it to HOLLYWOODLAND (as it originally was set up by realestate companies in the 1920`s when hollywood was just a piece of worthless land near a desert)

american laws are pretty funny sometimes, at least for us europeans ;)
