But I do agree...a wheel and pedal set up is next level for immersion and game play.
Need to know your budget too. Whatever you do....do not...get a wheel with only 270° of rotation. It is best to get 900° to avoid issues.
What I read about shifters though is that after the one that came with the G27 none of the others have extra buttons. Thrustmaster + SKRS seems a bit pricey just for the 'realistic' shifting but I suppose I can always add that.

From atsaccessories.com I purchased an Eaton 18 speed shifter along with an M8 adapter to attach it to my USB shifter (other shifters will need a different size adaptor), a turn signal V2 and the essentials button box because my wheel has a decent amount of buttons.
I would also recommend the Track IR5 head tracker. It takes a bit to set it up but once dialed in it is essential to me. I have both the ball cap refelectors (for speakers) and the powered lights (for headphones). I find they are equally efficient at tracking head movement. If you have any lights behind you that the tracker might pick up don't bother getting it.

I picked up this generic set of LED lights for the track IR5 for more than half of the cost of Track IR's cost and they work great. Just make sure they will clip on to your headphones.

If you have an Android tablet look into getting the SimDashboard app. It will display important features like what is damaged on your truck, a speedometer with RPM, eta's, time zones, mileage, information on what you are hauling, how much it weighs, how much you should bring home if the delivery is successful. Unfortunately it does not work with the truck's GPS. It is good for the immersion but I would not say it is essential. In saying that, if I start up the game without it working I will exit, fix it and restart. I do like having it.
You got ripped off if you paid that for the shifter only.
Cheapest -> G27,29,923 set
Don't go lower than logitech
Some direct drive sets are on sale now. My Fanatec DD Pro was 6x price of my G29. Now it is about 3x~4x.
IMO, it is time to just buy a DD set.
