Once I have my own truck I do jobs from the city I am currently in. Normally no Quick Travel. I service and refuel the truck after each job. Then look for the next job from that city.
The job market lists are normally sorted by Price per Distance but I do not mechanically pick the top paying jobs. Interesting jobs could be a fun cargo, heading in a certain direction or something else.
Fatigue simulation and traffic offenses are disabled. I take IRL breaks whenever I need to and follow the basic traffic rules anyways to cooperate with the NPC traffic. Traffic offenses are annoying.
I like to explore the map and often take detours to "discover" more roads, cities and "?". In my vanilla profiles I view the videos and take the photos trophies. No hurry. If I miss something this time, I can do it next time I pass. I do not hunt for Steam achievements.
No hired drivers. No need for excessive amounts of money as long as I earn enough to cover expenses (fuel/service/repairs/tolls) and sometimes buy a garage or a truck/trailer.
No modded trucks or trailers. Hey, I haven't tested all the default trucks yet! I do use ProMods map mods in a couple of profiles together with a season mod and a "real traffic" mod.
But hey, it's a video game so you can generally pretty much do whatever you find enjoyable as long as you're not going out of your way to ruin someone else's experience.
Anyway, like the others, I play pretty relaxed. There's other games if I'm in the mood for something more exciting. I've got a few of the "realism" settings on just to keep it interesting and drive much like I would if I were really driving a truck. Well, as someone with no experience or training in the real thing at any rate, so I'm sure I'm doing a few things wrong. But it's not like I'm going for an exact replica or anything.
Most of the time I do not follow those same rules and regulations in game. It's more like a FedEx driver simulator for me.
To make things interesting/challenging, I leave everything on in the options regarding moving and other traffic violations with the single exception of keeping detours turned off.
Then I go for my personal best (money-wise) in a variety of job categories, but only count the trip as successful if I have a perfect run - delivery on time, no violations, no collisions, and no damage to my truck (other than tire wear) and no damage to trailer or load.
My categories for personal bests include, but are not limited to: longest distance traveled on a perfect run, most money overall ever made on a perfect run, most money made on a perfect run with a heavy/oversized load, most money made on a perfect run with a hazardous load, most money made on a perfect run that is expedited (rush job), etc.
You get the idea.
The reason I have detours turned off is because there aren't enough secondary roads to make detouring even remotely reasonable in some cases (the detour can be much longer than the distance left in the trip making it impossible to be on time and have a perfect run).
I drive according to the "rules of the road" in this alternate universe that SCS has created.
Instead of taking issue with the differences between reality and this game, I drive at the speed limit and drive defensively according to known AI behavior. My in game issues with the AI are few and extremely infrequent.
Lastly, and I can't stress this enough, I wouldn't even think about playing this game if it was as stressful as a rw OTR career is. If the AI were even a tenth of 1% as unpredictable or inconsiderate as rw drivers can be, I wouldn't even think about playing this game.
These days, about 99/100 of my trips in game are 'perfect' runs. It's not difficult at all. But you do have to pay attention while staying ahead of your rig, and the AI traffic.
No getting around that, but after all, a player needs something to do, right?
"Keep on Truckin'"
10/4 good buddy, this is the rubber duck n I'm gone.
- Home base is Flagstaff (chosen at random) with garages in Tucson and Yuma, plus one in Phoenix just to store my extra personal trucks. I'm not gonna bother buying any more garages. Don't need the extra money from extra drivers.
- I pick a destination at random, drive some cargo there, and pick the next destination at random from that city, and so on. If I go back to Arizona at any point (to it, not through it), I make it a point to end the day at one of my garages, and switch trucks.
- The only "progress" I'm trying to make anymore is to add more gold to the roads, and visit all the depots. But I don't go real far out of my way to, either. It's fun to revisit places.
- I just drive how I feel like driving at the moment. Maybe I skip the weigh station, maybe I don't. Maybe I run the red light, maybe I don't. Maybe I go with the flow of traffic, maybe I nose some fool out of my way for hogging the left lane. I love the zen aspect of the game so I don't usually go faster than 65, unless I'm bobtailing, then it's kinda fun to go racing on the interstate.
- I always try to rest between 7 and 12 so that I wake up between 5 and 10 AM. I don't really care much for night driving, it'd be cooler if there was a full moon and stars.
