Can we please fix AI "yielding"?
Or at least actually make them yield? I keep getting in to "accidents" from the AI failing to yield and crashing in to me when I clearly have the right of way. This shouldn't be rocket science to program. :) Thank you!

This has been an issue since the game launched in 2016, innumerable posts have already been made about it.

The AI is basically running on rails, and sometimes those tracks end or join with another path along the road. So far as I can tell, they have only limited perception of you vs. other AI vehicles, so you may well be in what’s essentially a blind spot for them and so they drive into the side of you coming off an on ramp, for example.

If you watch the AI you can begin to recognize potential spots and avoid putting yourself in harm’s way. This follows on from the (in-game) reasoning that you are a professional driver at the helm of 80,000lbs of steel and should drive defensively since you will demolish almost everything that crosses you - or, in short, don’t assert your right of way into having a collision, because at the end of the day, you were still in a collision.

All the AI follow a rigid, set algorithm, learn the algorithm and their behaviour and you won't have a problem with them. You cannot drive in the game as you would in real life, they can't see you, can't predict what you will do and cannot make judgements about what is safe or correct driving. As meatballs_21 quite correctly said "AI is basically running on rails" you can't see the rails, but you can learn where they are.

I did ask this once in an SCS Live Stream, don't remember if was Gavin or any other Developer, but the explanation is quite simple and makes sense. if the merging lane yielded, AI will be sitting forever, the traffic jams will be epic... so they made the game like that. As the 2 answers above, pretty easy to learn, and there is a little trick, AI do react to some things you do, if you tap your brakes before the merging lane, AI will yield for you, but your cab must be ahead of the AI, else they will not give you way.

Only thing missing is some Karen getting out of the car and cussing up a storm at you claiming that you drove into them. On purpose. :Owlcat_tongue:

Why don't you make a mod there does it if you say it's so easy to program. I would love to see the AI behave better from time to time, but still i also think the AI is pretty close to the real world, because there you never know what others do either. I don't have any problems with the AI i just drive in the game as i does in real life I only trusts myself and take the time to get around.

Al has gotten worse over time. ON the freeway it's 75 mph Al is driving 35 mph.
Turn right at red light stop extra time. traffic can come all the time at stops and red lights non-stop. Change right to left the stars become Black bad, older graphics were better at night. The tap makes a lot of mistakes, you can quickly save on the hand control.

Well, that was a post alright. it had words and everything.
The meaning of it all might take some time to become clear, however... :steammocking:
Not even Google Translate could make any sense of it. :steamsalty:

In real life I drive as if everyone else is an idiot and dont see me. Works perfect. I do the same in this game, cant remember last time I had an accident due to not my fault. (And as mentioned earlier, learn the pattern and you are home free)

In earlier versions, this is exactly what happened, and the peanut gallery complained about that instead, that the AI was too timid.

By several measures (like left turns from a two-way stop) they still are, but things have improved.

I don’t think the variables that would effect this are moddable. There are some that impact the AI’s behaviour and decision making (patience, safety, yielding to let traffic out) which make a difference, but the ways they follow the paths or the way they react to other traffic don’t seem to be adjustable.

You need to signal properly. The cars in SCS's Truck sims will happily yield if you signal well in advance. But if you're the kind of player who starts their signals only with the turning of the wheel, then of course that won't work.

The issue I always have is the AI is all too courteous to other AI drivers, most especially when another AI vehicle is merging onto the interstate from an on-ramp. The truck or vehicle I am behind will slow drastically and more efficiently than I causing me to either swerve to avoid or smash into their rear - and I don't follow that closely.

Just curious, but does anyone know of a game out there that pulled off actual intelligent AI driving behavior?

I have not played every game out there, so there may be some games that solved this problem years ago, and SCS has to step up to their level, but from the few games I have played, or watch played, that attempted driving in a real world scenario, they all are worse, or have the traffic so minimal that it presents no issues.

It's just that people seem to think programming the AI behavior to be more human is easy, and that SCS could absolutely do it, it's just that they're lazy.

Maybe it is possible, but I have to believe that a smaller game developer, with the limitations of budget and processing power they have to work with, to program AI traffic to behave accurately in a real world way has to be incredibly difficult.
There's a way to fix this: don't drive like AI!

Or "Don't drive like in real life, drive to suit the game",
