These things are not even remotely meant for any more stressful task than office work as they lack active cooling which you need for gaming. If you try to play on a Macbook Air you will just stress your overpriced hardware which is in the best case thermal throttling to hell (in order to not overheat) or it will straight up overheat and stop everything until it cooled down.
Your best bet (if you don't want to invest into proper hardware) is to play the game via e.g. Nvidia GeForce Now. You need a decent internet connection for that.
I’m playing on a stock M1 Mac Mini (2020) with 8gb of unified memory.
My settings net me 20-27 fps on the open road, down to 15-17 going through a complex junction.
Yes, that’s not amazing, but given the pace of the game I find it acceptable, and I’m thoroughly enjoying the game – I wouldn’t tolerate this on a twitchy game like Forza Horizon say, but 80-ish hours in, I haven’t felt like the frame rate is affecting my gameplay.
My advice is just to try the demo version, play with settings and see what you feel. Some people are more sensitive to lower frame rate.
It’s down to personal preference and subjective experience. At the end of the day, if you think you’re having fun, you’re having fun :-)
Below are my settings, entirely trial and error!, possibly they could be optimised further, but I try to balance fiddling and playing the game.
I’m outputting at 1080P full screen with 200% scaling, medium SMAA, SSAO off to a 4K TV — I’m sat back on the couch holding a DualShock.
Reflecting scaling is 50%, reflection detail low, vegetation medium, grass, shadows and mirrors on low, texture quality and light visibility on medium.
I have Oregon and Washington DLC.
I’m running mods too:
Real Traffic Density ATS
Grimes’ Frosty v4.8 + Heavy Weather and Clean Roads.
Realistic Mirror FOV
Google Maps Night mode
Longer Yellow Lights
Dynamic Truck Parking
Owned Trailer Company Skins
SiSL’s Trailer Pack
Top Corner F2 Mirrors
Minimal Adviser Interface
ATS Police Tweaks
Municipal Traffic Pack
ATS Real Logos Projext
Real companies, gas stations and billboards
SiSL’s Mega Pack
M1 Mini has remained cool and responsive throughout and I’m playing for multi-hour extended sessions, but Wolfgang isn’t wrong to raise temps as a concern (I was sceptical too and have monitored it) — and so I can’t speculate on the thermal efficiency of the Air, or what you’d get out of an older Mac with an Intel processor.
Again, the demo is free, and trialling it made enough of a case I was happy to go buy it.
Hope that helps!
