I have not driven a Semi, but I drive Stick frequently. Games will help, but are no substitute, and I think this is exaggerated with Semis due to the weight and transmission differences.
U are very correct.
There's also video's on YouTube that could also be of some benefit to u, on just this very subject as well, just use it based on the transmission brand / # of gears & any other key details to edit u'r search on YouTube, on the type of setup u plan to run within ATS.

1. pop off the shifter cover (shifter "H" pattern Grey cover) hiding the screw holding down the shifter ball.
Unscrew the ball.
2. slide down the shaft of the shifter add-on to the shaft for the G29 shifter.
(ENCLOSED WITH THE SHIFTER ADD-ON: will have an allen wrench.
Use it to tighten the [4.] allen screws located on the shaft / 2. in the front, (when the shifter is pulled down in the middle down position), & 2. on the left side of shaft.
3. (USING A WINDOWS COMPUTING DEVICE):
plug in the USB Type A plug into a dedicated port & u'r done / no enclosed software or drivers to install or download / device is "Plug and Play"

most trucks today are Automated Manual transmissions so no clutch or driver shifting.
are few hold outs but most mega trucking companies quit buying manuals and they are vanishing from the used truck markets.
My truck is 12 spd AMT and i do not miss the clutch one bit.
