The shift pattern in these boxes generally has reverse in the shifter slot #1 position (upper-left) and the reverse slot (push-down-lower-right) doesn't exist.
You could still set up your shifter however you want in the options menu, however. You'll just have to re-order the way you bind the shifter slots to suit (just remember the first slot in the menu list is the reverse shifter position).
[edit]
To clarify, in the options-->controls menu: 'Shifter position 1' in the menu is the reverse gear in-game so you would bind this to the hardware shifter reverse slot.
Simply use H-shifter option and select the appropriate transmission.
Odd, the reverse position works on the G27, I don't see why it wouldn't on the G29. I use the reverse position to couple/uncouple the trailer.
If this doesn't work, try programing anything to this to make sure your shifter is working properly.
If you're having problems, just reset the settings and select the default 10, 13 or 18 EF depending on the transmission that your truck has, for added realism. YOu would be surprised how easy it is to get used to shift up to 18 gears.
