Truck vs. Load Weight
I'm sure this is a simple question, but I have no experience with trucking or even towing anything.

How do I best determine how heavy of a load I can/should choose to go and pick up in order to make sure the truck I have can handle it effeciently?

I don't know any math behind it but I follow the rule of the weaker an engine the lighter a load you should use.

Yeah, that make sense. Thank you for your reply :)

I was wondering about just how light (or heavy) a load before engine X became an inefficient choice. As I could be driving from city to city with a smaller day truck I was looking to plan ahead as best I could.

Trial and error. You will know pretty fast if the weight you have is more than your truck can handle.

the stock trailers are all fine on the weakest engine, heavy mod trailers are a different story. until somtime around the last update (maybe the one before that) pulling a 200t load with a 550 hp (3000 Nm torque) in the 389 mod truck wasn't an issue, even if you had to stop on inclines. it would work, but you werent winning any races. Now I seem to need closer to 4000 Nm to get those really heavy ones to work well. Not sure if that is the mod truck or a physics change that caused it.

Speaking for *vanilla* game only, the heaviest load you'll get is 25t. That's almost nothing for even the smallest class 8 engines. So, basically, there isn't a load you can't handle with even the smallest engine in the game. It'll be more about the gearboxes than the engines, just stick with the 13 & 18 speed boxes on the smaller engines and you shouldn't have any trouble.

Thank you very much for all of your replies.

I'll look for the 13 and 18 speed boxes and the 4,000Nm torque.

Appreciate the help!

No problem, have fun trucking.

You won't find a 4000Nm engine in the vanilla game, they all have realistic OTR truck engine outputs. As I said, even the smallest engine you can buy in the game will be more than enough for any vanilla load.

The largest engines in the game are the Cummins ISX-15 600 and Caterpillar C-15 625 available for the W900. Both have the same output at 2779Nm.

The T680 and 579 both have an ISX-15 550 available at an output of 2508 Nm.

Massively overpowered for the vanilla loads, but handy if you plan to take on some overweight load mods. Even so, the 2779Nm engines will still deal with anything but the most extreme overweight loads.

^ right, my comment on the higher torque was mostly due to ETS with the 150-200 t loads. I don't even think there are any loads pushing more than 100 for ATS, so the stock motors are plenty strong. you won't get there in a hurry, but that isn't the goal of the game.

25t (or close enough to) is the highest load available in BOTH games without mods. Talking about mod loads & engines/vehicles without clarification when the OP hasn't mentioned them just causes confusion and complication :P.

As far as mods go, I've never come across anything for either game over about 70-80t. Wouldn't mind taking a look at those larger mods if you have links, I'd certainly like a more believable model for my overweight edits :).

Keep in mind the load weight is not including the trailer and truck weight.
Max total weight in general for US is 80000lbs(36t) without any special permit. There are exceptions to some roads afaik.
In Europe trucks can usually be 50t or 110000lbs.

A more poweful engine will save fuel in the long run.

Heaviest loads I've found so far is 46000lbs(20.9t) without mods.
I do not think I have been weighted in a station at more than around 73000lbs total.
But then I usually stay away from the buldozer and excavator. They are not paying enough for the weight.

I'd stay away from the heaviest loads unless you use the MX-13 500hp or greater engine.
Though I guess fuel economy is not something to worry about with default economy.

The Heavier the Load the more torque and powerful engine you need, so start with lighter loads if you are just beginning.

I don't keep links, but google should find them for you. atsmods.lt and ets2.lt are generally where I get them from.
-siemens (?) transformer, about 95 metric tons (170k pounds), available for both, outdated for ets but worked ok last time I tried it in directx but opengl not so much, using euro style trailer in ATS might feel odd, think it is (or at least it was at one point) in the ats workshop
-someone made a dump truck on trailer mod for ATS that had weight about same as above.

-jazzycat makes a heavy addon for their cargo and locomotive packs, sometimes hard to find but ets2.lt has it just make sure you get the addon and the regular trailer packs, its a smaller download though, follow the directions to correctly overwrite, this is the one that will push loads up to 200 metric tons.
-roadhunter pack for ets goes up to around 60 or so tons, think they also have one for ats.

there are other's Im sure, just all I can remember right now. these are what I regurally run, others get mixed in when I see them but most standalone ones are not updated so they usually get pulled once or twice and then dropped.

Ah yep I have those... except the addon to Jazzycat's pack... that one had escaped my attention, thanks.
