It has:
Double Trailers
Far more trucks (and will continue to have far more trucks.)
Covers the entire US landmass, including Canada and Mexico.
But ATS will, over time, if not already:
-Cover more in larger scale and detail, and accuracy (have you driven down I-95 in Florida in ALH? It's like driving on the Pacific Coast Highway with all those crazy turns, mountains and a 30 ft cliff into the ocean! The real I-95 in that area is actaully quite straight, flat and tame and usually stays away from the ocean (US-1 and FL A1A OTOH do drive right along the coast). Believe me, I've driven in one more or another the entirety of the highway in that area from Jax to Miami. The real I-95 in Florida is the cure for Insomnia. That is just one example how this will be improved! That and the Florida Turnpike which is not present in ALH, but I think with the scale of ATS, we'll see that and I4 in ATS.) That's just an example of the map detail and size issues in ALH.
-Have more customization for trucks. Both have a lot of options for that, but more recently, SCS is adding small details to further personalize the trucks too, that and interiors as ETS has already. With that said, by default, we'll have less trucks.
-More accurate rules and regulations. I'm sure we'll see places where Right on red will earn you a ticket in ATS, that and we already see how they implemented the truck limtis that CA has IRL, but not being applied in AZ and NV. In ATS, they followed a very straight forward oversimplification of the rules, 65 mph for hte motorways, 45 for everything else (which actually, would wlro for a lot of town areas IMO. The 30MPH town speed limit is in my observation, very rare outside the downtowns.)
- Over time, bring back something we haven't seen since Hard Truck: 18 Wheels of Steel, cops chasing you down. ALH has speed traps which instantly stop you, but they usually give you a ticket if you end up anywhere near them. They also mentioned making the police more region specific. We already see the Ford Taurus in cities and the Crown Vics in the countryside. I'm not sure if we'll get some that fit the region more too eventually, due to licnesing thoguh. I do know they want to add mroe realistic police to the ETS game that fits the individual countires more though.
-If Canada and Mexico are to be included, I'm sure they'll fix the inacuracies involved with that. One thing that threw me off were the European Road signs for speed limits in Canada, where the Canadian speed limits looked like the US signs, but with differnet text.
-While still not perfect, traffic the resembles sanity more closely. People complain about ETS2 traffic, but let's not forget ALH traffic would slam into you at a red light frequetnly, slam the brakes at all of the interchanges and ramps and continue to drive at 25 to 45 in a 65 zone for at least 2 or 3 miles for no apparant reason.
-Speaking of Ramps, while in the current game, they do have intersections at the Interstates, which IRL should be VERY rare, and in the game should be removed once the rescale takes effect, those stupid offramps that were also plauging ETS2 are no long a thing in ATS. I remember ALH having plenty of those as well, especialyl when reaching an interchange of two interstates.
My point is, both ALH and ATS are neat games with a lot to offer, but the latter will take a very long time until we see the complete product, and we are not even sure how much of the map will come with the base game as it is! We know CA NV and AZ for sure, but of course, there is a lot more to the US!
also SCS also developed hard truck games? is the hard truck series just a ball they throw around or something, I have the physical version of Hard Truck King of the road which is developed by Jowood and i have Hard Truck Apocalypse in my steam library made by russians who barely speak english
They did Hard Truck: 18 Wheels of Steel after Valusoft switched from the old russian dev of that series IIRC. It originally was more settled on truck racing and originally only had a Renault, DAF and ZiL. HT2, is closer to the Truck Sims that SCS did, but they were not in the game until 18 WoS.
That seemed to have started a long, and generally well liked series of Truck sims from that point on. I'm not too sure about any Hard Truck series that didn't have the Valusoft label since then, maybe those have a relation to the original Russian Devs.
Rewind the clock a few years and thats how the industry was, take GTA San Andreas, what you bought was what you got, there was no Addon DLCs, look at the early Need For Speed games, they had no DLCs to them, the only game you got was what you bought either on the interwebs or from over the counter at your local game store.
But since then, people have been spoilt by companies with DLCs bringing new and exciting things to the game, for a price, so naturally, people now expect pretty much all games to have DLCs come out and to add some sort of thing to the game, which is both a help and a hinderance for a game developer. on the plus side, if you are a small indie developer, like SCS, having DLCs means you can split up the game map a lot more and add to it when you could, instead of breaking the bank in one shot to make the entire game all in one go. Also, DLCs mean that the game can be released a lot faster and be out for longer than if it was a 100% full release.
When it comes to the pricing, that mostly depends on the market as well as the amount of time, effort and resources that had to go into the DLCs production, if SCS wanted to, they could give us the whole map free as DLCs, but everything else, from trailers to trucks to new delivery points etc etc etc and so on, would be paid DLC, they have to make money off of the game in order to fund other projects, thats simple economics.
And yes, it may seem that SCS are a big company, but in reality, theyre small, with very little in the way of money to splash around, hell, after Going East and other DLCs were sold, SCS were able to buy a real world trailer and some pallets of sand to be able to make more physics adjustments for the trucks under load and to record the sounds from the trailer and all the other technical stuff, so without GLCs being paid for, the game would pretty much die out 100% unless SCS got a MASSIVE amount of money from somewhere, enough to pay the bills and fund their projects.
Also the very reason DLCs were brought into existance was to add on to the existing game, you paid to get more out of the game, thats how DLCs have always worked, whether it be map packs, weapons for FPS games or gamemodes, it all adds to the game, it all gives you more to do other than the base game. Take Rocket League, its a fun and amazing game as stock, but if you pay a little you can get more cars, different maps, different game modes, diffeent visual items... the list goes on.
Sure with ETS2 and ATS, you can say that things like paint packs and traielr packs arent really necessary, but things that fuurther your experience are, ETS2 you have Going East and Scandinavia, which allow you to drive further east into Poland and Hungary and Scandinavia that takes you up into Sweden and Norway with some stunning scenery, if you want more driving space, then you have to pay for the hard work the Devs put into giving us the areas to drive in. The same will go for ATS.
I think if that would not have happened they probably would have made more trucks and some fake Volvo (Valaint) would have been released by now and maybe even a Freightliner under the name of Forerunner like in ALH. But I think that incident has scared SCS off from making fake truck brands based off the real thing (And lets be honest, even though they used fake names it didn't take a genius to make out what the trucks actually were)
If you did, you would know that standard, non Map related DLCs wouldnt cover the costs, not to mention not EVERYONE will buy it, so you cant garuntee a steady income from sales, paint and customisation DLCs arent for everyone, especially people like OP.
Thats beside the point! you seriously do not get it do you. Addons nowadays make the game, gone are the days where the Base game was all it took to rae in the sales and the money, nowadays its all about the added DLCs, the extra bits glued on, i was using Rocket league as an example (also btw yyou are wrong, the lateest DLCs do have Arenas and cars included). but take a game like Battlefield or Rainbow six, great base games, but the DLCs build the games into what they really are, take Battlefield 3, the base game was amazing, the diverse map packs and weapons made it legendary, Look at Rainbow six, brilliant base game, the new DLCs are building the game out and appealing to more people everywhere.
At the end of the day, SCS or any Game developer for that matter, are not going to stop adding DLCs and getting their funding from DLC sales just because one or two people dont like it, there will always be a minority that dont agree with a decision, the important thing is to please the vast majority in the hope to sway those against, if a dev starts worrying about both the minority and the majority, that will sink the game.
Its not a sustainable model. It gets them some extra money, but at those prices, its not really that sustainable. megadethsteve666 had said it best from what I had on my mind.
SCS has already stated that they won't use fake brands as during the course of ETS2, it actually took longer with the fake brands to get them officially licensed. That is why there is a lack of trucks currently and the negotiations are still on-going in terms of the Peterbilt 389 and Volvo VNL 780 (?). At some point we will get them though, but its going to take some time for it go through the legal departments and get the final approval.
