In ATS you drive in USA, while in ETS2 you drive in Europe, duh.

Joking aside, there are some differences - tires don't affect performance in ATS (in ETS2 different tires influence fuel usage, etc.), american trucks are a bit different - they are longer because roads in USA are mostly highways, while in Europe you often drive on narrow roads. Also maps in ATS are of higher quality. ETS2 is slowly getting there, but some areas in ETS2 were created very long time ago (especially the ones in the main game and first DLCs), when the dev team was less experienced and when technology wasn't there, so they slowly update old areas when they can. That's why playing ATS without mods is great and ETS2 is much better with mods (at least with ProMods), but mods require you to buy all the DLCs so you can use them.

Roads are much wider, average speed you will be driving is much faster (80 or 90kmh as a legal limit in ETS2 vs 55, 65, 75mph (88, 104, 120kph) in ATS with the limiter not being on by default), hills are larger and longer, trailers and truck length are longer, and parking spots are in average more challenging.

Also in my old computer ATS is a bit of a burden when driving in California. I guess too much things are happening in that state. Have not experienced resource being not enough in ETS2 in at least the right half of the available map.

I played ETS2 for few months and recently started trying ATS, and the experiences are quiet different.

To be fair, even the older ATS areas got updates to make them look better.

And the main difference is really the terrain and the truck. Gameplay loop is identical.
It's mainly the decision of "where do i want to drive? Europe or USA?" that decides what game you want to play.

Buy both. I did. Have a couple hundred hours in ETS2 then switched to ATS. Only 100 hours so far, but am enjoying it much more than ETS2. I am finding the loads far more varied and the scenery much more varied than ETS. But that's just my personal opinion.

Cheers.

Fun fact - if you own at least Iberia, France, Scandinavia and Baltic Sea DLC, the longest possible route in ETS2 from southern Portugal to the nortwestern tip of modelled Finland is about 500 miles longer than Bellingham/WA to the end of the new Texas DLC in ATS.

You can do even longer trips with mods. ProMods + MiddleEast Addon (which adds even a part of Africa with some roads in Egypt) + maps like RusMap (if you ignore the political stuff and just enjoy the views), Southern Region, TheGreatSteppe, etc. There are even mods adding a lot of Asia, including South Korea.

I usually use this list of mods when I play ETS2:

True - but then with the Mexico Maps, Coast2Coast and Canadream you can do the same in ATS. Have no measurements and not all maps, so I don't know where they end. In Vanilla however, ETS offers - it is my feeling sometimes unexpectedly for especially some of our American friends - offers the longer trips.

I'm yet to install huge maps mods for ATS, but from what I saw, the quality is lacking. I went through the thread of Coast To Coast and trees grow on the streets and sometimes you can't finish delivery because delivery point is blocked, etc.
