Free mods vs. paid mods
I have learned that when I downloaded an A-car and it was a free truck mod, I learned that there is no engine sound and the headlights shine too brightly. The headlight issue is not only with the Autocar but also with the T-800 Kenworth and the B model Mack. I assume those mods may have encountered bugs or something. But I hear that half of those freebie mods may be terrible compared to the paid ones. The Diamond Reo free mod seems to be one of the lucky ones that works great. I am tempted to get with my local college so I can learn how to make a truck mod so that I don't make the same mistakes as I have seen on some of the mods such as headlight brightness, etc.

Paid mods are not our problem. They're your problem.:steamfacepalm:
Mods = potential problems
Lots of mods = LOTS of potential problems
It is right on the launch screen every time you start the game, when you run mods.
"THIS GAME CONTAINS UNAUTHORISED MODIFICATIONS. IF YOU EXPERIENCE CRASHING TRY REMOVING YOUR MODS PACKS."
Mods are unsupported by SCS, they are entirely your responsibility.
Mod authors do not always maintain mods and keep them up to date, any new game update has the potential to break every mod. Workshop mods have NO guarantee of working, either on their own or with other mods.
Mods can affect the game in unintended ways causing problems not related to the mod itself.
Always have a new, unmodded, vanilla profile for testing mods out and don't rely on mods being compatible with the current version of the game.

It could be that the free ones you are talking about have not been updated to work with your version of the sim, or require additional mods.

Some of the best mods I have are paid mods, and the most problem free.

Paid mods are not automatically better than the free ones you find. One thing to note, discussion and distribution of paid mods is frowned upon, especially if it contains unlicensed content such as a truck manufacturers branding.

Your local college, or any, won't be able to teach much about modding for this game. That's one of those things you'll learn better by finding information online about it. Good places include the SCS Forum (here[forum.scssoft.com]), ProMods website (here[www.promods.net]), SCS modding wiki (here[modding.scssoft.com]). A lot of work is needed to make mods for any game, and doesn't happen over a few days or months.

The sound issues you were experiencing is likely due to those mods last being updated prior the sound system update a couple years ago. There's probably a fix around somewhere for it. Any mod involving sound requires the use of FMod Studio, as the game uses the FMod sound engine now. It's not an easy thing to learn to use. Thankfully it is well documented if you just wanted to try and fix the sound for those previously named mods yourself. :>

Have fun.

In the case of the Autocar, they are for sure outdated, the author has stopped development on them prior to at least version 1.40, or 1,39.
I'm also pretty sure you downloaded a stolen version since it hasn't been available from the authors' website ever since.
He only has his Freightlner FLC available, but that needs a fix to work.

Anyhoo, there is, or maybe was a fix for the Autocar on the SCS forum that solves some of the important issues, I think, but not sure the fix was made by DigitalX,...

I personally stay away from paid mods, not for ethical reasons, but there's no guarentee they will work forever either and un till i know how to fix 3d models like trucks and trailers and they aren't "locked" they are a no go for me :-)
There are some very good free mods (in the workshop) out there that are kept up to date quite fast when needed.
Some of the paid modders (if you will) also have free mods.
In the end it's just up to you, do you want to spent money on something that may or may not be developed in the future, something that is probably locked an you may not be able to fix/update yourself, or are you ok with the models you get for free :-)

I will never pay to use mods... I might donate to someone who makes mods I like, but I will NEVER pay to use a mod

You can get some very good free mods from reliable mod makers who maintain their mods but there are a lot of abandoned free mods because the mod makers for whatever reason decided not to keep supporting them.

I have a lot of paid mods and they are all from reliable mod makers who support their mods. They are kept updated regularly and usually far quicker than the free mods.

The biggest problem for mod makers whether free or paid is people stealing their mods and uploading them on mod sites. Which brings me to the Diamond Reo which you say works great and is free. I have the paid version of that truck mod and I suspect the mod you are using has been stolen from the mod maker who I purchased the mod from.

If by chance you do become a mod maker and are able to make a very good truck mod and all the time and effort you put into making it and then someone just takes it and uploads it to a mod site. That is what is happening and is causing a lot of mod makers to rethink whether it is worth their time and effort and could be one of the reasons why you see many mods abandoned by their mod makers.

Anyway, these discussions usually end up badly because they descend into a I hate paid mods argument and all the legal experts in the forum giving their views about paid mods.

There is no guarantee any mod will work forever. I have been buying mods for a long time now and all the mods I have bought are still well supported.

Some of the best truck mods are on the workshop, look for mods by harven and overfloater. My experience with paid mods is mixed.

Ditto.

Anyone can write and publish a mod (free or paid); quality control of mods is via the honor system.

Eddie, (mod author)

i rather liked free better than paid

There are some excellent free mods as well. The Mack Superliner, The Mack R, The Freightliner FLB, and the Kenworth K100E are all great mods and are completely free ( they are also all on the steam workshop except the Superliner
Skippy Aug 3, 2022 @ 8:11pm
The only problem ive had with the Superliner is that it backs up REALLY slowly ( 2 mph ) and thats a pretty minor issue
Raija Aug 3, 2022 @ 8:11pm
My go to mods are engine sound mods light mods and exhaust mods. I do wish they had a mod that extended the map a bit, like make it a little wider or something so you can travel more on the road.
