Mods = potential problems
Lots of mods = LOTS of potential problems
It is right on the launch screen every time you start the game, when you run mods.
"THIS GAME CONTAINS UNAUTHORISED MODIFICATIONS. IF YOU EXPERIENCE CRASHING TRY REMOVING YOUR MODS PACKS."
Mods are unsupported by SCS, they are entirely your responsibility.
Mod authors do not always maintain mods and keep them up to date, any new game update has the potential to break every mod. Workshop mods have NO guarantee of working, either on their own or with other mods.
Mods can affect the game in unintended ways causing problems not related to the mod itself.
Always have a new, unmodded, vanilla profile for testing mods out and don't rely on mods being compatible with the current version of the game.
Your local college, or any, won't be able to teach much about modding for this game. That's one of those things you'll learn better by finding information online about it. Good places include the SCS Forum (here[forum.scssoft.com]), ProMods website (here[www.promods.net]), SCS modding wiki (here[modding.scssoft.com]). A lot of work is needed to make mods for any game, and doesn't happen over a few days or months.
The sound issues you were experiencing is likely due to those mods last being updated prior the sound system update a couple years ago. There's probably a fix around somewhere for it. Any mod involving sound requires the use of FMod Studio, as the game uses the FMod sound engine now. It's not an easy thing to learn to use. Thankfully it is well documented if you just wanted to try and fix the sound for those previously named mods yourself. :>
Have fun.
I'm also pretty sure you downloaded a stolen version since it hasn't been available from the authors' website ever since.
He only has his Freightlner FLC available, but that needs a fix to work.
Anyhoo, there is, or maybe was a fix for the Autocar on the SCS forum that solves some of the important issues, I think, but not sure the fix was made by DigitalX,...
I personally stay away from paid mods, not for ethical reasons, but there's no guarentee they will work forever either and un till i know how to fix 3d models like trucks and trailers and they aren't "locked" they are a no go for me :-)
There are some very good free mods (in the workshop) out there that are kept up to date quite fast when needed.
Some of the paid modders (if you will) also have free mods.
In the end it's just up to you, do you want to spent money on something that may or may not be developed in the future, something that is probably locked an you may not be able to fix/update yourself, or are you ok with the models you get for free :-)
I have a lot of paid mods and they are all from reliable mod makers who support their mods. They are kept updated regularly and usually far quicker than the free mods.
The biggest problem for mod makers whether free or paid is people stealing their mods and uploading them on mod sites. Which brings me to the Diamond Reo which you say works great and is free. I have the paid version of that truck mod and I suspect the mod you are using has been stolen from the mod maker who I purchased the mod from.
If by chance you do become a mod maker and are able to make a very good truck mod and all the time and effort you put into making it and then someone just takes it and uploads it to a mod site. That is what is happening and is causing a lot of mod makers to rethink whether it is worth their time and effort and could be one of the reasons why you see many mods abandoned by their mod makers.
Anyway, these discussions usually end up badly because they descend into a I hate paid mods argument and all the legal experts in the forum giving their views about paid mods.
There is no guarantee any mod will work forever. I have been buying mods for a long time now and all the mods I have bought are still well supported.
Ditto.
Anyone can write and publish a mod (free or paid); quality control of mods is via the honor system.
Eddie, (mod author)
Glad they work out for you :-)
i rather liked free better than paid
