The plan they have right now is to keep on adding new states to the current game. Do not think there will ever be an "American Truck Simulator 2" anytime in the near future. I mean, they did do that for ETS but ETS1 was in need of a graphical overhaul but seeing they already conquered that in ATS there is a slim chance of a second version.

For now, explore and learn about MODS. I have the complete USA, upper mexico, some alaska and British Columbia of Canada. Some real quality maps also. Jsut finished a 3658 mile delivery!

Let's see what arrives first, New York or Florida in ATS, or Greece in ETS2.

SCS posted in a blog.

American Truck Simulator Map DLC Clarifications [blog.scssoft.com]

In this blog it is posted:
It would be great to get the chance to reach the East Coast, it would be fabulous to be able to push north towards at least 60 degs latitude and south towards the Equatorial. But ultimately, it is up to you, our fans, if this happen - you will vote with your wallets. We expect to get the right guidance from you on future growth of our team to handle the new opportunities and challenges.

The general consensus will be once they reach the smaller states east of the Mississippi that we should start seeing state packs, or multiple states in one DLC.

We, the player base, vote on continuing development with our wallets. This simply means buying the official map expansions even though they are not a required purchase.

Edit: As for an ATS2: Just like with ETS3 it won't happen. The licences SCS have are only for the respective game and not for any follow-up game meaning that they would have to renegotiate the licences which is both expensive and time consuming.

There is an unconventional way to reach Each Coast and New York quickly within a few years:

Once Texas is out, SCS may opt for a cheesy route to East Coast by releasing Arkansas, Tennessee and Virginia respectively, following the route passing from Texarkana (TX), Little Rock (AR), Memphis (TN), Nashville (TN), Knoxville (TN), Roanoke (VA), Richmond (VA) and finally reaching Norfolk (VA) on the East Coast. Norfolk is the home of the largest naval base in the world, Naval Station Norfolk. It is also home to Maersk Line, Limited, which manages the world's largest fleet of US-flag vessels.

If i had been at the helm of SCS, this route would have been my go-to-choice once Montana and Texas are done. The total area of these 3 states are roughly only half of Texas.

Mind.

If the DLC still make sales we maybe reach Alaska

As long as we keep buying the DLCs - eventually.
I just bought the latest 3 states for 30 bucks a few days ago.

I'd love to drive from one coast to the other, even if it's gonna take hours.
Might need to prepare some food when that day comes lol

SCS has said they will continue expanding if the expansions keep selling. Their goal was the Lower 48. They did say, depending on sales and interest, they would like to move North into Canada, and south into Mexico after the main US is done.

9 states in 6 years, do the math.

I wish they would work on making the cities larger and more populated.
Maybe I just don't know the game that well. I've had it for a while but only play a couple hours at a time every few months.

It just seems empty to me.Driving from on ramp to off ramp, it all feels repetitive and we need alternate routs, small side roads with sharp turns and big hills.

I can agree with this, but there is a consideration that large trucks are not driven, and sometimes not allowed, into the cities, and are often not practical on the small roads. They spend most of their time on the highways and outer cities, which is what the game includes mostly. It makes sense the way it is, though I would enjoy some more variety as well, who wouldnt?
