it is 2022 why am i getting fined for having my headlights on during the day
like what the ♥♥♥♥ have you never actually driven a car ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ there are cars that have lights that you literally cannot turn off, they are built to be on during the day, there is no such law so i shouldn't have to pay $550 because my lights are on dumbasses

I don't have this issue at all.

The OP has not given any information about any mods, etc.... so for now all anyone can do is guess.

In the last few years I never had a fine for that. Perhaps you have high beam on.

Any chance you were driving around/near sunset/sunrise?
There are no fines for no lights on at day time in the game for the current states.

From what i can tell most US states require headlights on from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise.

In the end it's the drivers' responicibility to have them on, automatic or not.

Though i have fines turned off, everytime i play the game i turn the lights on by habit, weirdly enough i don't do that irl.

Modern cars and modern municipalities have always-on headlight regulations and laws. It's old-fashioned to manually turn your lights off and on. In the US, though, there are fewer places that require your lights on all the time, if any. It's been a while since I've been to the States.

I once in real life had to pay a fine for having my high beams on in front of police. I was on a country road in the middle of night in the heat of summer and the cop decides she needs to pull me over.

She didn't forgive me for unrolling my window just barely enough to accept the ticket, just a sliver. Her lights and my lights attracted every mosquito from horizon to horizon. I guess I was bad, I made her explain the details of the ticket. To be fair, I wasn't from around there so it was important to make certain I could comply with the fine.

By the time she was done with me, every bit of exposed skin she had took on the texture of a golf ball from all of the bug bites. I thanked her for her time, corrected my beams, and drove off after several minutes' conversation. I have no doubt that if there was punishment for the crime, it was the cop who suffered for it.

The amount of the ticket? $10.

The fine is for having your headlight off. There is no fine in this game for having your headlight on.

First click of the light button is running lights, second click is headlights.
If you only have running lights on, you can be fined for not having your headlights on.

Unfortunately the time of day it decides your lights must be on is a bit iffy (and in bad weather your lights must be on too, regardless of time of day).

The simplest solution is to always have your headlights on.

ATS does not have any code that fines you for having your headlights on. The fine in the game is explicitly programmed to only fine you when your headlights are off during designated times. I'll admit that there may be a location or two where "lights required" time is incorrectly set. Some mod maps also set this incorrectly. Some mods also modify certain settings without telling you in their description. Economy mods are particularly bad for this. Also worth noting that if the game thinks it is raining, it will fine you for not having your lights on, even if it isn't visually raining for you yet.

While on the topic of real-world laws: Most countries these days have some sort of DRL-law, Daytime Running Lights. Requiring at minimum DRL, headlights if not equiped with DRL. This is mostly a concern of safety. The US as a whole hasn't adopted a DRL law, but many states have.

That doesn't even make sense. Since you would be the one in front. You should have your high beams on in that situation.

I have driven around in game with headlights on bright during the day, and have never had a ticket, I have driven both day and night with bright lights on, and been flashed by a cop, and never received a ticket. Is this a real thing?

edit: I HAVE received a fine for NOT having headlights on, so now I drive everywhere with headlights on.

I still get fines in-game for having them on too.

The specifics on Daytime Running Lamps that I can find are not mandated in the US, at all. The individual state laws vary with headlight usage in certain conditions, such as when visibility is below 1000 ft., to as lenient as 200 ft. Some states may require at certain speeds (like Alaska at 45 MPH or higher on designated roads), or when wipers are running (as is the case with Pennsylvania).

But specifically on DRL's? These are not mandatory, but many cars these days do have them, and I'd be fine if they were legally required.

For the topic at hand, I think there may be a fine with high beams on, but if not, you can ignore that. But there is no coding for regular headlights on to be fined for any reason, only when they're off starting from probably about 7:30 PM to like 6:30 AM or so. Not completely sure of it, but I have gotten a headlight fine before 8 PM in the game, so.. yeah.

You can't as it is not coded into the game.
Read Reese's reply above:
"The fine in the game is explicitly programmed to only fine you when your headlights are off during designated times."
The code in the game regarding fines and how they are applied has been extracted and examined to establish exactly what the rules are.
This topic has been thrashed to death, both here and in the ETS2 forum, where it is more complicated by the fact that Europe has rules about always-on headlights.
In simple terms, run ALL THE TIME with dipped (low beam) headlights on, not sidelights, not main beams. You will never be fined for this in either game.
