One with more torque in the engine, and greater first gear ratio with the transmission could move heavy trailers more easily.

ps. More axles, transmissions with retarders will help stopping your truck , too.

Just hover over the "Heavy cargo" bar on the Truck analysis panel while you are upgrading your truck.

Whatever truck you prefer. The game will let you haul any cargo with any truck. You can use a 4x2 day cab with 375HP if you want.

I did quick jobs until I unlocked the basic day cab, and bought a Pete 579 with a Cummins 450HP/1650Tq and drove it until I unlocked everything else. More torque helps, but 1650 is plenty for any job, and you really don't need more than a 6x4. I do have a Western Star 8x4 mid-lift, day cab, set-back front axle, 600HP/2050tq, 18-speed trans. that I use for heavy haul though.

You can technically use anything that has a powerful enough engine and the proper drivetrain for it though I prefer the 389, W900 or Western Star 49x since their less aerodynamic build is more suiting to low speed heavy hauls.

Any truck in the game can do it. If you want something that looks the part. The old style Kenworth and Peterbilts are agood pick and they come with the King of the Hill Engine which is meant to be the top notch. An ideal setup would be a truck with torque, and three axles in the back. But two works. Longer wheelbases. I like to use the Kenworth T880 which you can download on the steam workshop. It doesn't have the three axle variant yet but it's not uncommon to see them work heavy jobs. Sergei Dratchev on youtube drives one of those.

Does the bigger motor really help?

Engines with more torque give you better acceleration and allow you to maintain better speed on hills, so yes.

If its an incredibly heavy load, yeah. You'll stall out on hills if you don't have enough torque to get up there.

Been there done that! Had to cancel load but I just wondered if some trucks just went faster?

In a situation where speed is limited by engine power, which is usually the case when going uphill and often the case even on flat land, some trucks (the ones with more powerful engines) will go faster, yes.

The better phrase since the release of Heavy Cargo might be that any truck in the game can do any load in the base game.

yes, maybe i'l try one day out of curiosity but you might gettin trouble with the very basic truck configs and trying to do the oversized jobs in some scenarios. To be honest, the only time i've ever gotten stuck was in ETS somewhere in north africa with promods where they had some insane grades to get on the freeway. Some of the older countries in ETS do have really bad ramps that will give you trouble.

I just did a Haul Truck Chassis 360/6x2 Denver to Colorado Springs (pretty darned flat), but could not make it up the first on ramp to the Interstate, slowed to zero mph and started rolling backwards.
