Tire Traction Test
I did a test of some of the tires in Smarty's Wheel Pack as well as the ratr0 developments 24.5 pack. Did not see these results coming...

Interesting Test and Informative. YTV well done. Appreciate taking the time to provide the detailed information plus links to other mods as well. Interested in the 359. Always liked Shortys Wheel Pack Mod.

Good stuff. Lot of discussion on whether tires really make much of a difference in game and this is (as far as I am aware) the first real comparison showing the differences. The Michelin Works as always been my goto tire since I started ATS, good OTR, good off-road and great for heavy haul.

there's certain inaccurate things they love to repeat around here.

Can you expand on that a bit?

Not changing front tires?

I plan on doing the same test in the rain and test front tires as well for lateral grip. Might be fun to do a brake test too. This test was only about rear tire traction as I had just put those Goodyears on earlier in the day and was surprised that I had very little traction pulling a 70,000 lb load.

Looking forward to your test: You may be planning on this as well? Suggestion: Test A bob tail as well. Reduce the weight on the steer axle. See how various tires respond.

Tire Test Part 2, rain
Here is a link to the second tire test done in the rain. I used the racetrack outside of Tucson for the test. Hope you find it interesting.

Tests of the SCS tires would interest me more. ;)

Quite an effort, thank you for putting the time into it! Excellent idea to go to the track, the closest thing we have to a skid pad.
Understeer seems to be 90% of tire modeling by SCS, simply a question of the front loosing grip and the truck plowing off straight, with a fairly simple parameter that would change with pavement vs gravel, dry vs wet etc. and presumably a tire grip parameter that is factored in. I wonder if the files for the individual tires can be unpacked to see how their grip was defined?

Sandhill, you can drill in to the tires in the Smarty's wheel pack and see that the tires are given a wet grip factor. It varies between something like 1.09 and 1.17. The higher number means a better wet performance. I didn't see where there was any mention of dry grip. I expect that the game weather setting chooses a setting that the tires wet setting is matched against and factors it for dry or wet.

I could change the number but not save it. I have to admit that I didn't try very hard and I haven't looked at the ratr0 developments tires to see if I can change those. I'll have another go at it soon.

Sure, you can, everyone who mods in this direction has to emulate the data structure created by SCS.

I've never looked at the tire data myself, but I think the SCS Heavy Duty is the best in general.

Then it should be that simple...look to see what performs best, but of course what looks best to you, if you're not giving up much performance, counts most :lunar2019smilingpig:
