Engine Brake?
Hi all,

Forgive my ignorance, I love this game, but know little about trucks. I have seen in the controls there is a keybinding for the "Engine Brake" - what does this actually do and when would you use it?

Many thanks.

It slows down the truck just like the brakes...but with the engine brake you don't have worry if you have it turned on, low air beeping sound. So, the engine to me is the best feature in the game. You know how many times I kept getting low air pressure sound.....more than I can count. Engine brake is very useful, at least for me. I had to rearrange my controls to get that a function in both ATS and ETS2 games. I hope this helps, others can chime in on this.

It is used instead of using your brakes and especially when going down hills. You can set it to toggle on and off and use it when required.

To add to Willy's advice,(I am bored Willy) use the engine (jake) brake and down shift gears to slow down. If you aren't slowing down enough then add the foot brake.
I generally leave the engine brake always on, Toggle On. That way engine brake activates as soon as throttle is not pressed.
With Toggle Off you hold down Engine Brake On/Off button to activate Engine Brake. Release button turns it off.
Engine Brake doesn't work if any throttle is applied.
There is also 3 or 4 levels of Engine Brake strength you can adjust with buttons .

Also it sounds great :2017stickydrink: especially at 2am in a city.

In the old Daf i drove years ago i used the engine brake to get back at road users that annoyed me by tapping it quickly while driving (it was foot operated next to the clutch) to produce a cloud of black smoke :-)
Probably not very good for the engine, but at that time i thought it was fun :-)
can't do it in game though.

Exhaust brake not an Engine brake Engine brake that sticks while fuel is being fed to it u would know sounds like u just blew it up and the white and blue raw fuel smoke will roll ..Used to have a 400 big cam Cummins that would stick once inawhile u knew it

Bit late to post this but as a trucker my self there are a few different types of braking in large trucks, exhaust breaking is what your hearing when used in the game, it basically closes a flap on your exhaust system to put back pressure on the engine, slowing the engine down while in gear, and is most efficient in higher revs, normally round 2000 to 2200 revs.
Any other braking like retarders are used on the gearbox, magnetic pull, wont go into it, google it :)
happy trucking guys...

The game doesn't use exhaust brakes, it uses engine brakes (aka Jacobs). Exhaust brakes are a flapper valve that is located between the turbo outlet and the downpipe; engine brakes turn the engine into an air compressor by activating the valves independently of the camshaft.

An exhaust brake has about 35-40% of the efficiency of an engine brake and they haven't been common place on transport trucks for the last 30 years.

EDIT: just a note on the exhaust brake portion, they are still used in arctic weather applications to aid in keeping the engine warm at idle by adding exhaust restriction; they are plumbed differently to allow engagement in this scenario but still are not used as braking devices.

I hated when truckers would do this in real life in resedential areas. Trying to sleep and we would get truckers doing this ALL the time.
