Question for players using a wheel but no eye tracking.
How do you look around when you need to?

Currently using a standard Xbox controller but thinking of getting a wheel, I've tried out eye-tracking and it's not for me.

With a controller, I steer with the left stick and can still freely look around with the right stick (and push to reset). But I can't find any steering wheel controllers with an analog stick built in: It's like steering wheel controllers are built exclusively for racing games, ignoring the needs of driving games like ATS.

If you use a steering wheel without eye tracking, how do you look around?

I use the mouse to look around and have Camera #1 bound to the left-click to snap back quick.

I position my seat so I can see both mirrors and use the mouse to look around.
Makes it easy.

I use the mouse and the dpad on my G29 to look around and zoom in, dpad for centering the view and a buttons on the wheel for cab and outside rearview.

I use d-pad and have a center view button setup on my wheel. I do switch to mouse when I am at a T crossing. I have track IR but it's simply not worth the hassle tbh.

Thanks for the replies!

Currently my d-pad is used for operating lights and changing cruise control speed, but I'll try both mouse and d-pad, and if I can get used to either, I'll likely buy a wheel.

I use a Logitech G920. With my wheel, I have it set up so the D-pad controls my camera. Left and Right D-Pad look left and right, Down is the #1 interior camera, and Up is the #2 exterior camera. A is Activate, B is Parking Brake, X is Set Cruise Control, and Y is headlight toggle. The bumpers are turn signals, and the menu buttons are for the main menu, and the map. This works well for me, and I do not often need to reach for the keyboard during a trip. I still do, for things like connecting a trailer, and more uncommon controls. Depending on the wheel you get, you may have more, or less, buttons to play with.

I recommend getting a G920 wheel and mapping the buttons like ttower says and using your Xbox controller, which fits snugly against the G29 shifter, for additional buttons. You can then avoid using the keyboard in most situations. You can also add a tablet or even a Kindle Fire to use this software ( Sim Dashboard Server found at https://www.stryder-it.de/simdasboard/pcinstall ) which uses SCS's SDK features.

I use my L1 button on my G29 for "Interior View," which I use to snap-back to center. Then I use the red dial to look left and right. It's not analog, but thankfully there's a plugin that smooths out the camera snap(with adjustments as well) called Smooth Interior Camera: https://forum.scssoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=248870 . It smooths out all camera looks in Interior View. Works great. Been using it for years.

If I need more control over the camera, I just grab my mouse. I keep my wheel mounted on a shelving board which I then mount to my desk using C/G-clamp(only on one end, as the wheel mounts keep the board from moving forward further and I keep it from moving backward). This allows me to remove the wheel easily from my desk. The board gives me enough room to leave my mouse and keyboard on the desk. My shifter is always mounted on the right side, off of the board, directly to the desk.

Unfortunately for my current setup, my screen faces the window to the outside behind me, so head-tracking wouldn't even work as the sun would mess it up. But when I do use headtracking, it works and feels great.

I have a setup like Reese, my wheel attaches to a board which attaches to the desk.
What is different is I have a usb 10 key or numpad as some call it. Mounted on the right side.
5 is center view, 4 and 6 look left and right, 7 and 9 left and right mirrors, 8 zooms view.
Other buttons are used for various things. between the buttons on the 10 key and my wheel (logitech g920) I have enough to never touch my keyboard.
This setup works great as I can always look where I want regardless of wheel positions.
If one uses a shifter this may not work as well.
Just anther option to think about.

Or there is an almost free option for head tracking, the software is less than $3 USD, only hardware you need id a webcam or an old Android phone. Been using it for years and pretty happy.

I tried buying it on that site, but got an error message, "To comply with international regulations, this transaction has been declined."
