Empty pallets are indeed a thing. When I was doing dedicated freight for WalMart....I can't count the amount of backhauls that I did from stores to bring empty pallets back to the DC.
Also, if you're a thief you can make good profit from pallets :-)
And for example, the company i work for makes stuff for VW, Duvenbeck (the hauling company) does it the other way around for VW, brings us empty pallets from VW that we send back with the goods we make for VW, also picked up by Duvenbeck.
It'll never happen, pure fantasy. Plenty of trees they can cut down to make replacements.

When I saw this thread I thought the same thing people wrote above. Yes, they reuse and have rentals so of course they'd be shipped back empty. A lot of informative comments in here, I just thought your comment was funny lol... I def agree w/ you on that comment, but thanks 4 a good laugh!!!
