It may advance the game-time a bit since you will need to wait until that driver has completed their current haul.
Once you get to the point that you have enough trucks and drivers to start raking in the cash (which increases as you add drivers and they gain XP), you can afford to have a spare truck and once you return to your base, you can "RELOCATE" yourself to your other truck instantly. Or if you have a free slot at a garage you end up at, you can relocate the truck to that garage and relocate yourself where you have a different spare truck. I am just not sure what happens or where your current truck ends up if you relocate yourself to another truck when not at your current home base.
I actually have 4 spare trucks to play around with, and 1 vacant garage slot, if I want to shuffle those trucks around. For example I currently have 4 trucks and drivers in Los Angeles. If I haul a load there instead of its current base and want to change to a different truck, I drive to the LA garage, relocate my truck to that location, and relocate myself to one of my other trucks. But I am in a position where I can afford to do that, making about $390,000/day.
