Realistic accuracy of travel?
I'm thinking of giving this game a shot while it's one sale. How does driving between cities/states in-game compare to the actual drives? Like, does it take several hours of in-game time or is it more like 10 minutes of game time takes you across what would, in reality, take you several hours to traverse?

I'm not hoping for Desert Bus levels of realism, but I would like to maintain at least some semblance of what the actual trips would take.

No, it's in 1:20 scale. So every 20 miles in real life is 1 mile in ATS. Currently, you can drive from each point of the map (South NM to North CA) in about an hour or so if you go 70.

The map is 1:20 scale.

Time is scaled 1:20 on the highways, and 1:3 in cities/depots.

So, no. It does not take several hours real-time to do an average length delivery.

The game is on a 1:20 scale. So for every 1 real life mile, in game will be about 20 miles.
The drives are quite a bit shorter, but you can go a couple hours if you look for the longest drives you can find.

There are a few mods that have 1:1 scale, like the Dalton Highway mod if you want that sort of experience.

The scale of the map is 1:20 So, at highway speeds, what would take about an hour IRL, takes about 3 minutes in game. In the cities, time slows down to about 1:3 and some of the cities take awhile to get from one side to the other (Las Vegas comes to mind here, it can take 5 minutes of real time to get from one side to the other if you are on city streets)

An example journey, I did yesterday, was from Barstow, CA to Hobbs, NM (986 miles) and it took me an hour and a half to complete following all speed limits.

Is the scale the same in ETS2?

Pretty much. To my knowledge ETS is 1:19 except for UK which is 1:15.

The scale does some unfortunate things to the speed zones too. For example some areas you will be in a 30mph zone, then get a 55mph zone, and less than 3 truck lengths later it is back to 30mph. I kinda wish areas like that would just remove the 55 zone but, whatevs.

Well it sound like with modding I could make it more my liking. 1:20 just seem a little extreme to me. I'd probably be more interested in 1:5 or so. I've got a few days, I can look into it. Thanks for the info everyone!

That would be a good place to start if you want a 1:1 scale. I vaguely remember some other maps on the same scale but idk if they have been updated, or even remember the names haha.

Okay, so I broke down and went ahead and bought the $12.34 bundle with the DLC. Not sure if it's all worth it, but it included the New Mexico map, so I thought that alone was justification enough.

Anyway, I've only made about half a dozen jobs so far, and I guess I can honestly say that the 1:20 ratio is good enough. Maybe later when I've got a feel for the game I'll get some of the mod stuff (C2C and the Dalton Highway), but for now I'm satisfied with it.

And not to hijack my own topic, but what are some good XBox 360 Controller custom keybindings? I tried to start out with the manual shifting (3rd choice) but soon chickened out and went back to the "Automatic transmission" (2nd) option. I've played a lot of non-shifting driving games (like GTA) in the past and honestly, I'm much more used to using the A (south) and X (west) buttons for Gas and Brake rather than the trigger buttons, so I probably would want to go that route, but I'm not sure how I should set up the rest of the buttons. Any ideas/suggestions for the most commonly used functions?

compare it to real life I can go clear across the the country in a few hours on the game. And in real life it will take me a week.

1:1 scale for cross-country travel is not practical. This scale could be used to recreate relatively small town or neighborhood, otherwise the game would not be fun, seriously. However, I wish the map was more detailed, maybe 1:15 or even 1:10 with more auxiliary routes.

I would like that as well but the process of making maps is long enough now and altering the scale again would only increase the time it takes to make the maps. The way the maps are with the addition of New Mexico seem small but when the game actually does increase in size to a very large map then the current scale will seem better. I think SCS was very wise to do the rescale but going beyond that I don't think is practical or necessary even though I agree with you that it would be better.

Just to be clear, i was referring to the scale of 1:15 and 1:10 and not 1:1 which is absolutely absurd.

The 1:20 is max scs should do for now but 1:10 is the max scale I prefer. It took me 42 minutes to drive Las Vegas to Albqueurue with one layover to sleep in ash fork it's around 650 miles total trip.
