Otherwise it's just personal taste what button on the wheel you assign to what function, remembering that as the wheel turns so do your buttons, so it might not be the best idea to assign a function that you want to find reliably to a wheel button unless you will only call for that function when the wheel is straight.
Using mouse and keyboard to select functions for a while you can find what you rely on most and consider adding them to the wheel buttons.
If that's all you want, try cruise control.
Options/Keys&Buttons - assign a key or button to "Shift to Neutral"
Options/Controls - assign a key or button to "Automatic Gearbox:Drive"
Options/Controls - assign a key or button to "Automatic Gearbox:Reverse"
Throttle and brake should of course be assigned to your pedals in Options/Controls and have nothing at all to do with the forward and reverse assignments.
Good luck !
