fuel consumption depends on so many things as you will know. I usually reset the display before every trip just to watch the consumption. Do I get you right, that you use automatic transmission. You can save a lot of fuel, manually shifting up on the highway going @ 55 mph in California f.e. The automatic usually stays at about 1400 rpm in D12. After shifting to D13 you are travelling @ about 1100 rpm.
Loads are a factor, of course (depending on the engine size), but the main thing saving fuel is trying to travel long distances at the same speed using cruise control. 55 is excellent for this purpose, but 75 is more fun... ;) The Peterbilt 579 has a gauge for the momentary consumption. There you will see how the consumption goes up picking up speed. Each time you have to accelerate fuel consumption rises drastically.
I am not quite sure, but I think in the game bigger engines consume less. (btw. did you check realitic consumption in the options?) Not that realistic, is it? ;)
I have a profile for every truck in the game. I cannot share your opinion that the Kenworth consumes much less than the Peterbilt (they use the same engines afaik, so there shouldn't be that much differences), but it is difficult to compare. I once had a trip with the T680 all through California up to Phoenix and ended up with 7.9 mpg (500 hp engine and a medium sized haul). I haven't had that with the 579, so maybe...
I hope this wasn't too confusing! :) Have fun! :)
I was driving W900 until yesterday (gave it to hired driver and doing Quick Jobs now to get remaining 10-15K for Peterbuilt 389), covered about 11K and ended up with average 7.4 mpg using mostly 6-speed manual. This number could be higher, but I prefer shorter deliveries so I drive in cities and urban areas at least 30% of the time
Theres alot of factors that go into it. but knowing frist hand you wont get anywhere close to being able to get no 8mpg ever, maybe if the wind is at your back the whole time..
Driving in cities just cut that mpg to half
Could there be difference between imperial and US gallons?
Usually hauling 53s mostly close to the 80,000 lbs limit...
I guess that automatic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are worse in the game, as they rev higher...
All great stuff... I will continue to enjoy and tinker with my driving. After all thats what its all about. If I can configure my controller better I might switch to manual as I would prefer the control over the drive train but at this point I am finding that when I try a different key binding that the controller config screen just wont let it change.... anyway...
Cheers
In the W900 sleeper with the top C15 engine and a 13spd 3.08 axle ratio, I get around 6.5-7mpg in the beta 1.5 patch. The fuel consumption has gone up quite a bit for sure.
The 3.08 ratio allows cruising at 55/65mph at ~1250rpm.
I was averaging 7.8mpg in my 579 daycab before in my main profile. This has dropped by at least 0.5mpg now.
I do have to babysit it a bit though as it wont upshift soon enough on flat ground. So I force it up to 13th and preemptively downshift before a hill. This also fix the issue with dropping to low and shifting down two gears when its not needed.
