Use a game controller or joystick for at least some analog control - the differerence is night and day. And $30 can get you a good controller or joystick, no problem.
Of course a wheel is an exceptionally great way to play and well worth the cost as well - they are whole different games (better) with a wheel.
However, I've always felt the game was slightly beyond my control...UNTIL I discovered driving from the bumper view. The 5 key on the kb puts me right on the bumper with a clear view unencumbered by all the stuff in the cab. Still have my GPS and mirrors and that's all I need. I now feel comfortable and in control, no longer afraid to pass another truck for fear of drifting into his lane. Try it, it's awesome.
The only downside is that, when I stop, I can't look right or left, so I switch to cab view (the 1 key) until I check the intersection, then back to the 5 key for driving. Works great.
After researching wheels I found many of the top line models way out off my price range but I recently found a Thrustmaster T80 on sale. After some fiddling with the controls it's fantastic! I can't imagine playing any other way.
In the end it's really up to you I feel. The game gives you a ton of options for configuration of controls. Almost to many at first glance.
I got a THX certified surround sounds system that takes care of the sound, very nice to have.
The game works surprisingly well with Nvidia 3D, and the option to increased the field of view makes it even more immersive.
I though get complaints about my truck being too noisy. These Scania V8s aren't known for being quiet with sound mods, lol.
That's how I play the game and it's like a zen type of game. Sitting and becoming too relaxed do have a downside. Crash your truck or worse, crash into the police!
Then there's the AI to cope with. The bloody trucks are so stupid and just pulls out on you.
Other than that, have some fun and keep on
Just some food for thought though...

I don't know how expensive all that gear would be, doesn't sound cheap. Money would be better spent on the licences and qualifications and get a job driving. You'd get real experience with all the responsibility, problems and challenges and you'd get paid to it.
