Head tracking via IR, Facetracknoir, VR headsets, custom built driving cockpits, custom panels for switches/buttons, upon many other things. I'm sure you can just search on Google Images for "Driving Simulation Setups" and see what others have done.

If you don't have the money for the other fancy stuff there is keyboard and mouse. You can drive with the keyboard, and if you play with the settings you can drive via the mouse.

Keyboard/mouse is awful for all driving games because the turning always immediately goes to the extreme left/right on all turns. It works, but loses all subtlety and control.
Use a game controller or joystick for at least some analog control - the differerence is night and day. And $30 can get you a good controller or joystick, no problem.
Of course a wheel is an exceptionally great way to play and well worth the cost as well - they are whole different games (better) with a wheel.

i use 360 controller
Keyboard and mouse works for me. Its not as bad as with other driving games since it doesnt just immediately turn your wheel left or right. It slowly rotates left and right. an analog input would be nice but the game is perfectly playable with a keyboard.

Logitech g27 is fantastic for this game.

Wheel plus pedals definitely is the way to go. You try it once you'll never drive without it again. Personally I don't recommend VR 3D - the resolution is wayyyy too low. You can't read any instruments, you can't read any road signs. The VR mode needs to be completely reworked.

VR and Wheel. The full complete experience. And the resolution is fine for me and the instruments are fine to read unlike what the post above says. Never had any issues with the Vive in this or ETS2.

I also use keyboard and mouse, first with ETS2 and now with ATS. It took a little getting used to at first and I customized the keyboard so the keys I use the most are grouped together (E for cruise control, e.g., left mouse button for high/low beam, etc.).

However, I've always felt the game was slightly beyond my control...UNTIL I discovered driving from the bumper view. The 5 key on the kb puts me right on the bumper with a clear view unencumbered by all the stuff in the cab. Still have my GPS and mirrors and that's all I need. I now feel comfortable and in control, no longer afraid to pass another truck for fear of drifting into his lane. Try it, it's awesome.

The only downside is that, when I stop, I can't look right or left, so I switch to cab view (the 1 key) until I check the intersection, then back to the 5 key for driving. Works great.

Keyboard and Mouse. Works fine.

KB/M worked fine for little time I used them. I found that a 360 controller was very easy and comfortable to use, though I still had to use the KB for many functions, which seemed a little awkward.

After researching wheels I found many of the top line models way out off my price range but I recently found a Thrustmaster T80 on sale. After some fiddling with the controls it's fantastic! I can't imagine playing any other way.

In the end it's really up to you I feel. The game gives you a ton of options for configuration of controls. Almost to many at first glance.

A Logitech G27 makes it easier to steer the truck and more fun too.
I got a THX certified surround sounds system that takes care of the sound, very nice to have.
The game works surprisingly well with Nvidia 3D, and the option to increased the field of view makes it even more immersive. :104:

I though get complaints about my truck being too noisy. These Scania V8s aren't known for being quiet with sound mods, lol. :steammocking:

That's how I play the game and it's like a zen type of game. Sitting and becoming too relaxed do have a downside. Crash your truck or worse, crash into the police! :steamfacepalm:
Then there's the AI to cope with. The bloody trucks are so stupid and just pulls out on you.

Other than that, have some fun and keep on :longhaul:in':104:

I don't know how expensive all that gear would be, doesn't sound cheap. Money would be better spent on the licences and qualifications and get a job driving. You'd get real experience with all the responsibility, problems and challenges and you'd get paid to it.
