Steering Deadzone question
Hi there,

I'm a big fan of ATS, and recently purchased myself a steering wheel to enhance my game experience. At the moment, I'm unable to afford anything high quality so I opted for a cheap alternative; the SpeedLink Drift O.Z. Steering Wheel. I'll hold my hands up and say that this isn't the greatest of steering wheels by a long shot, particularly with only a 180 degree turn, but I'm making the most of it.

The one thing that I can't resolve right now is regarding the deadzone of the wheel in ATS. When I turn the wheel whilst driving, I have to deflect the O.Z. by about 15 degrees or so in order for the game to respond by turning the truck, and then it responds by recognising a wheel turn of about the same rotation and thus results in a sudden, twitchy movement.

I'm prepared to accept that there's an issue with the wheel not being great, and have read online that the O.Z. suffers from a high deadzone. However, when I calibrate the O.Z. outside of ATS using the Windows calibration tool, the computer recognises an input from the wheel at only the slightest of rotations. This seems out of synch with ATS not recognising any input until 15 degrees or so, and then recognising that input in its entirety.

I have deadzone turned down to zero, and I even turned off the Force Feedback option because I've read somewhere that the FF settings can increase a wheel's deadzone due to the resistance of the motors.

If anyone has any advice (aside from get a better steering wheel, which is my mid-term goal but requires me to save up some cash), then I'd greatly appreciate it being shared.

Regrettably doesn't fix the issue, I'm afraid. The game still doesn't register the movement of the wheel within that 15 degree rotation space left/right from centre. Appreciate the assistance though, thankyou.

This one? Its a pretty good wheel...Try the Controller Wizard in ETS2/ATS? Its in the OPTIONS area..to the right..make SURE you clik on the "Advanced" button when you see it...theres some SLiders that may help?

look for "Wheel Sensitivity" in the Options/controlls .and "SLIDE" it a bit at a time while testing your truck....(turn off the Force Feedback to start with....once the Steering sensitivity is "SET" then you can add the Force Feedback a bit at a time) and NO a lot of players encounter this sensitivity problems..ONLY people with Belt Drive (expensive) wheels are not seemingly affected?

could work..but is your PC "Identical" to this guys PC? Pc Hardware is affected by the stuff inside a pc right?

I didn't say he had to use it, it's just a starting point, he didn't seem to have one.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I've gone through the Input Wizard and double-checked my sensitivity settings, but regrettably there's still no improvement. I have steering sensitivity at 0 (far-left on the slider), steering non-linearity at maximum (far-right on the slider) and steering axis deadzone at 0 (far-left on the slider). I've also tried using Xbox Controller Emulator to see if artificially applying an anti-deadzone condition to the wheel would assist. Regrettably it seems unable to solve the problem.

Seeking a comparison, I plugged in my actual Xbox controller keeping the same settings as above. ATS registers immediate input when I move the left thumbstick as the steering wheel with absolutely no deadzone.

At this point, I think I simply have to conclude that ATS doesn't seem to like the O.Z Speedlink wheel for some reason and chalk it down to a (fortunately cheap) mis-investment. I appreciate all the assistance that everyone has tried to give however. :)

Sensitivity should be far right, 100%
non-linearity should be around 25% give or take a little.

Did some "Research" on that controller...did you DOWNLOAD the Controller Program for it yet? wIthout this...you basically cannot adjust your controler at all?

To install the driver software, insert the supplied driver CD into your CD drive. If the installation process does not start automati-
cally, navigate to your CD drive using Windows
®
Explorer and start the program by clicking Setup.exe.
Always use the latest driver for the best possible performance.
You can find it on our website at www.speedlink.com.(NOPE...here really at the FOLLOWING link,, ya gotta DIG the friggin webpage to find it)

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the recommendations. I had installed the drivers but I haven't had that control program come up. Perhaps I've installed an incorrect driver given that there's apparently some digging that has to be done on the website. I will investigate further and come back with the results.

SHOULD be a link on YOUR desktop if its Installed? try a Search in your PC for that program?

from the driver page
Why does the racing wheel not work at all or only offer limited functionality in some games?

Keep the MODE button held depressed for three seconds to toggle between the racing wheel’s operating modes: XInput (for most current games) and DirectInput (for all older and some newer games). If the red LED (left) is lit, DirectInput mode is active; if the green LED (right) is lit, the device is in XInput mode.
